Yesterday’s Plenary meeting of the Welsh Parliament raised an interesting point when it highlighted the Welsh Government’s removal of the superfast broadband availability checker from their Superfast Cymru page, which makes it harder for people to know which areas will benefit from the state aid supported rollout.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today published yet another new evaluation report, albeit this time into their Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) programme, which shows how the scheme has tried to spread more Dark Fibre networks across the country and foster a wider rollout of gigabit broadband.

The UK Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) team has today published details on Phase 3 of their £5bn Project Gigabit rollout programme, which will in this phase work to extend 1Gbps capable broadband ISP networks to a further 570,000 premises in rural and semi-rural areas.

The Chancellor of the UK Government, Rishi Sunak MP, has today published his Autumn Budget 2021 statement – the second one this year – and sadly made no major new broadband announcements. But we did notice that a further £8m had been allocated to help 3,600 premises in north Scotland access “full fibre” broadband.

The County Councils Network (CCN), which is a cross-party special interest group of the Local Government Association (LGA) – representing 36 of England’s councils, has published a new report that warns of a growing divide in “gigabit-capable broadband” (1Gbps) coverage between urban cities and the “rural shires“.

The Broadband Delivery UK team have today launched a second batch of Open Market Reviews (OMR) for additional parts of England covered by Phase 2 of the Government’s new £5bn Project Gigabit broadband roll-out. This aims to identify any existing or planned commercial coverage by gigabit ISP networks.

In an unsurprising move, Ordnance Survey (OS) has confirmed that they’re working with Atkins to build the UK Government’s new National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), which is a digital map of underground pipes (water etc.) and cables (broadband, power etc.) that could help reduce accidental damage.

The UK Government has today revealed that 1,084 schools in rural areas have now been connected to a gigabit-capable “full fibre” network as a result of the investment they started in 2019, which is continuing under their new £5bn Project Gigabit scheme. A further 884 schools are planned to be connected by March 2022.

After a delay that was caused by a data backlog regarding previous voucher schemes, the Government’s (DCMS) Building Digital UK team have confirmed that they are now actively onboarding local councils that are interested in setting up a top-up boost for their £210m rural gigabit broadband voucher scheme.

The CEO of alternative full fibre broadband ISP B4RN, Michael Lee, has revealed that the UK Government (DCMS / Building Digital UK) are proposing “Voucher Priority Areas” as a semi-solution to the disruption caused by their new £5bn Project Gigabit programme in rural parts of Cumbria and Northumberland.

Last week’s cabinet reshuffle saw Matt Warman MP being somewhat unexpectedly sacked from the role of ‘Minister for Digital Infrastructure‘ within the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS). Replacements are normally appointed within 24-48 hours, but six long days have nearly passed without any clarity.

The latest data update from Thinkbroadband has estimated that 50.23% of properties in the United Kingdom now have access to take a fixed gigabit-capable (1000Mbps+) broadband ISP connection, which is up from 41.72% in July 2021 and largely reflects the impact from Virgin Media’s (VMO2) recent DOCSIS 3.1 upgrades.

Last month we reported that the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit programme was threatening to disrupt B4RN’s rollout of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in rural parts of Cumbria and Northumberland. The good news is that Tim Farron, Lib Dem MP, has secured a parliamentary debate on the issue.

The latest independent data from Thinkbroadband has revealed the top 36 local authorities in the United Kingdom where Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband coverage has reached over 50%. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list is topped by Hull (99.08%), where KCOM has already completed their full fibre rollout.

The FTTH Council Europe has today published their latest forecast for the growth of “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) based broadband ISP networks across Europe, which predicts that the United Kingdom will see a staggering growth of +488% over the next five years to achieve 25 million homes passed by 2026 (up from 7m by the end of 2021).

The UK Government has today invested £4m to support a new 2-year project (DCIA) trial, which aims to make it easier for network operators to access and deploy 5G mobile (mobile broadband) infrastructure on street furniture and public buildings, such as CCTV poles, traffic lights, lampposts, bus shelters and so forth.

Ofcom’s latest Summer 2021 report into UK broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage is now at 24% (up from 21% in Jan 2021) and 11.6 million homes (40%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 37%). Meanwhile, 4G mobile coverage remains stable and there’s still no data on 5G.
