29th October, 2022 (18 Comments)

Some 40 homes on the remote Scottish Isle of Coll, which is home to around 200 people, have been left without broadband until at least Monday because Openreach’s engineers cannot safely reach the island by boat in order to repair their niche Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) network. Some homes have now been offline for 3 weeks.

Israel-based chipset maker Sckipio has teamed up with Siklu to deploy a unique twist on hybrid fibre G.fast broadband technology, which is now able to get capacity from a millimeter Wave (mmWave) wireless link instead of a fibre optic cable. This is being used to deliver speeds of up to 800Mbps (aggregate) to flats.

Homes on the remote and small Outer Hebrides island of Scalpay in Scotland (Highlands and Islands) can now access broadband download speeds of up to 80Mbps after Openreach (BT) deployed their hybrid Microwave (radio) and VDSL2 based Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) technology.

Homes and businesses in the remote rural Northumberland (England) village of Coanwood, which is home to around 200 people, have become the latest to benefit from BT’s hybrid Microwave (radio) and VDSL based ‘up to’ 80Mbps Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) broadband technology.

Israel-based semiconductor company Sckipio has suggested that BT’s future deployment of G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband (here), which from 2016/17 aims to make speeds of 500Mbps available to “most homes“, could be fuelled in urban areas by millimeter Wave (mmW) wireless technology connected to distribution points (i.e. instead of fibre optic cable).

BT has launched another trial of their VDSL2 based ‘up to’ 80Mbps Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) broadband technology, this time via the small village of Westow that sits on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors in England.

The joint £94m BT and Connecting Devon and Somerset project in England has successfully used a “pioneering new” 4 kilometre microwave radio link to help supply capacity for an FTTC (up to 80Mbps) equipped Street Cabinet in the remote Devon village of Northlew, which would have otherwise required the installation of an expensive fibre optic cable.

The remote island of Rathlin, which is home to around 100 people and resides just off the north coast of Northern Ireland, has been given a significant capacity upgrade thanks to BT’s trial of a new “experimental” Wireless to the Cabinet (WTTC?) broadband system.
