Fibrus Telegraph Pole Engineer

Infracapital-backed network provider Fibrus, which has spent several years rolling out their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural parts of Cumbria (England) and Northern Ireland, has announced that they’ve just connected their 100,000th customer (up from 90,000 on 31st Jul 2024).

The Competition and Markets Authority has today appeared to give a “provisional” approval to Vodafone and Three UK’s recently tabled commitments (here) under their proposed merger (here), which were intended to placate concerns that the deal could result in a “Significant Lessening of Competition” (SLC) in the mobile market. But it will require changes.

The Horsham-based Telecom Acquisitions Group (TAL), which is a holding company for several familiar UK residential broadband brands (Home Telecom, Eclipse Broadband etc.), has today announced that they’ve signed a wholesale agreement to access and sell services over KCOM’s full fibre (FTTP) network.

Rochdale-base broadband ISP Zen Internet has today signed yet another wholesale deal with an alternative full fibre network, which this time will enable them to sell faster internet packages to homes and businesses by harnessing Freedom Fibre‘s 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the North West and West Midlands.

Merseyside-based alternative broadband operator and UK ISP BeFibre, which sells packages to homes and businesses via FullFibre Limited’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, has today refreshed their prices, shifted from 24-month to 18-month contract terms and launched a new 2.3Gbps speed package.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2, which invests millions in counter fraud measures each year and blocked more than £250m worth of fraud in 2023, has called on the UK Government to take “urgent action” to address the “epidemic” levels of fraud. The ISP is seeking stronger police powers and the appointment of a dedicated minister.

Some customers of O2 UK’s (Virgin Media) Pay As You Go Data SIMs (mobile broadband) have recently been surprised to find that they can no longer top their plans up with extra data. The reason for this appears to be because the mobile operator quietly removed them from sale during early August 2024.

Some customers of mobile network provider giffgaff, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on O2’s UK platform, appear to be experiencing a mix of two problems, including delays to new SIM activations and delays to transfers (ports) of mobile numbers – both in to or out of their network.

The HM Government of Gibraltar, which is a British overseas territory on Spain’s south coast, appears to have triggered a competition spat with the privately owned broadband operator, GibFibre, after it made amendments to the Communications Act 2006 that could create a “monopolistic environment within Gibraltar for Gibtelecom” (the state-owned mobile operator).

Network operator CityFibre, which earlier this year announced the acquisition of Lit Fibre’s full fibre network (here), has today resolved the problem of what to do with that provider’s customer base by agreeing to sell the retail ISP side of the business to the company’s co-founders, Tom Williams and Ben Bresler.

The Essex Police, which had been investigating thefts of copper broadband and phone cables from Openreach (BT) across several counties in England, have announced that a gang of four men have been jailed for a combined total of 14 years. The men were responsible for stealing almost £1m worth of the operator’s telecoms cables.

The Scottish Government (SG) has launched a new Digital Connectivity website, which is now directly integrated into the main government website and appears to replace the old Digital Scotland (Superfast Scotland) site. The new site continues to cover the SG’s various broadband (e.g. R100), mobile, IoT and green data centre projects.
