Significant flooding (c. 200 warnings issued), power outages and winds gusting over 90 mph as a result of Storm Dennis – the second major storm since Ciara just last weekend – has caused a fair bit of damaged to the broadband and telecoms infrastructure of multiple operators across the United Kingdom.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK appears to have cut the price of their top two Gigafast Broadband products (500Mbps and 900Mbps) by £8 per month, which is what they offer in urban areas covered by Cityfibre’s on-going Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network build.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published yet another “Loyalty Penalty” focused survey of 7,517 members, which claims that 68% of current broadband ISP deals from the big operators see UK customers being hit with significant price hikes when their contract ends (some prices jumped by as much as 89%).

As expected UK ISP BT has now begun reminding customers of their various consumer fixed line broadband, phone and mobile services that they should expect a small 1.3% increase in the price they pay from March 2020, which has been matched to the CPI level of inflation (Consumer Prices Index).

Three UK to Go Live with Ultrafast 5G Mobile at 65 Locations

After a delay Three UK (Hutchison 3G UK) has this morning announced the launch of their 5G mobile network for Smartphone users, which will be available across busy parts of 65 new locations from the end of this month. Previously they’d only been able to launch the network on their dedicated Mobile Broadband service.

End of Contract Letters to Start for UK Mobile and Broadband ISPs

Starting tomorrow all fixed broadband, mobile, home phone and pay TV providers will be required to implement Ofcom’s end-of-contract notification system (sent by text, email or letter), which is designed to help tackle the so-called “loyalty penalty” by keeping customers informed about the best deals and encouraging switching.

Virgin Media Adds 154,000 Premises to UK Ultrafast Network UPDATE

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has published their Q4 2019 results, which reveals that their “gigabit capable” broadband and TV network was extended to another 154,000 premises in the quarter (up from 119K in Q3) and their total broadband base now stands at 5,271,000 (up by 1.9K in Q4 vs 2.4K in Q3).

Oliver Dowden Named New UK Digital and Culture Secretary

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has initiated yet another cabinet reshuffle. As a result Nicky Morgan has been replaced by Oliver Dowden CBE (MP for Hertsmere) as the Secretary of State for the the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), who among other things will oversee the roll-out of gigabit broadband.

Ericsson Use Commercial 5G mmW Kit to Hit 4.3Gbps Speed

Telecoms kit maker Ericsson has announced that they’ve been able to achieve mobile broadband download speeds of 4.3Gbps by harnessing 800MHz of spectrum frequency in the millimeter Wave (mmW) bands, which was crucially achieved during interoperability testing using regular commercial solutions.

VXFIBRE to Rollout £10m Full Fibre Broadband in Colchester UK

The Colchester Borough Council (CBC) in Essex appears to be in the process of approving a proposal from Swedish operator VXFIBER, which is looking to invest £10m in order to build a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network that will eventually cover most of the town (homes and businesses).

UK ISP Aquiss has been offering both IPv4 and IPv6 internet addresses alongside their fixed line broadband packages since 2015, although until recently some of their other services had not yet been able to benefit. Ofcom Set to Become UK Regulator for Internet Censorship

The UK Government has today proposed for Ofcom to take on the role of internet content regulator via a new legal “duty of care“, which would hand them the power to force company websites and social media firms into removing “harmful” content (e.g. bullying, terrorism, child abuse, self-harm and suicide imagery).

The UK broadband, media and communications regulator, Ofcom, has today announced that, following a delay due to the General Election, they’ve finally found their new CEO in the shape of Dame Melanie Dawes. She replaces “interim” CEO Jonathan Oxley, who himself became a stand-in after Sharon White’s exit.

First Customers Live on KCOM’s New £100m FTTP Expansion
