Gigabit Networks UK ISP

Leicester-based broadband ISP Gigabit Networks has today announced that, thanks to their expanded availability across multiple alternative networks, their full fibre (FTTP and Ethernet) services are now able to reach a total of around 1 million businesses (on net) across the United Kingdom.

Three years have now passed since UK broadband ISP FACTCO confirmed that it would be deploying their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the small commuter village of Stocksfield in the south of Northumberland (England), but so far not a single property in the community has gone live.

Network operator Neos Networks, which runs one of the biggest 34,000km long business fibre networks in the UK – spanning 550 exchanges, 90+ data centres and 676 Points of Presence (PoPs), has today upgraded their Managed Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) product to provide capacities up to 10Gbps as standard (previously it only offered up to 1Gbps).

UK ISP BT and its digital incubation team, Etc. (that is their actual name), has this morning kicked off the first pilot of an Electric Vehicle (EV) charger that has been repurposed from one of Openreach’s old street cabinets, which was “traditionally used to store broadband and phone cabling“. Up to 60,000 more could follow.

One of our readers has spotted that London broadband ISP CommunityFibre appears to have significantly discounted some of their UK business plans, which for example means that their top 10Gbps (8.6Gbps average speed) tier can now be taken for just £350 per month +vat on a 36-month term (previously £730) or £300 for 60-months.

Energy and telecoms provider UW (Utility Warehouse), which is also known as Telecom Plus, has today issued a press release where they claim to have “launched the cheapest broadband deal in the UK” for new customers, with prices from £19.99 per month for 18-months. But there are some caveats to this, so take it with a pinch of salt.

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch.com and conducted in late November 2023, has warned that 13% of mobile users still don’t know if their phone is 4G or 5G ready and 5% say they still use a 3G handset.

Business ISP and managed service provider Evolve has today become the latest provider to hop onto MS3‘s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the North of England (mostly the East Riding of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire regions), which ultimately aims to reach 535,000 UK premises by the end of 2025.

Broadband network operator FullFibre Limited (Fibre Heroes), which is in the process of merging with fellow operator Digital Infrastructure (BeFibre), has announced that their combined Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network now covers 300,000 UK premises (RFS) and they’ve just appointed James Warner as Interim CEO.

A new alternative network and broadband ISP called Gig-ability is in the final stages of being setup. The operator appears, at least initially, to be planning to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across poorly served rural villages in Shropshire (England), before expanding into other parts of the UK.

Network access provider Openreach has revealed that broadband usage across their UK network of ISPs increased by around 9% during 2023 (up vs 2.5% in 2022) to total 94,722 PetaBytes (PB) of data. The results for 2023 also include data from both their “full fibre” and “superfast” networks, seemingly for the first time.

A major UK newspaper has suggested that some alternative broadband operators, many of which are deploying new gigabit-capable full fibre ISP networks, are being “lazy” by failing to hand over information about “when and where they are working on BT’s network“, which allegedly risks “exposing hospitals and banks to cyber attacks“.

The latest UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 60.54% of premises (up from 52.77% in H1 2023) and 79.86% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 76.22%).
