Sky One UK TV Channel 2026 Branding

Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has this morning announced that they’re bringing back the once popular Sky One channel to their Pay TV platform, which was the oldest non-terrestrial TV channel in the UK until Sky retired it in 2021 as part of a key branding and channel shake-up of their Electronic Program Guide (EPG).

European telecoms giants Telefónica and Liberty Global, the joint owners of Virgin Media and O2 in the UK, have reportedly now joined with private equity firm InfraVia Capital to progress their previously proposed £2bn bid to buy alternative full fibre broadband network Netomnia toward conclusion. The deal is likely to offer the altnet more than rival CityFibre could muster, but competition issues could be raised.

Over four months have now passed since mobile operator giffgaff, which is owned by Telefónica UK, become the only other retail ISP after Virgin Media (O2) to start selling fixed broadband packages over nexfibre’s new full fibre (FTTP) network (here). But despite this welcome development, customers on Virgin Media are still struggling to switch.

Brighton-based Flexgrid, which describes itself as the UK-focused connectivity aggregator for the channel market, has announced that they’ve launched a new website and now support the ability for partners to compare and order full fibre broadband services through a total of 24 alternative network (altnet) providers and suppliers.

A new study has provisionally found that Amazon Leo (formerly Project Kuiper), which is in the early stages of launching a new mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for the UK and globally, suffers from an all too familiar problem of being a bit too bright – potentially enough to disrupt observational sciences (astronomy).

The Common Wholesale Platform (CWP), which is a non-profit member-owned organisation that helps alternative UK broadband networks to connect with the retail ISP market, appears to have gone through a Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation. The company is now in the process of having its members, assets and brand scooped up by Digital Destiny Ltd.

Carlisle-based alternative broadband ISP Grain, which has so far rolled out their point-to-point full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 270,000 UK premises (aiming for 600,000 in the future) and in 2025 secured a £225m funding boost (here), has today doubled their top symmetric package speeds to 2Gbps (2,000Mbps).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today announced the launch of a new mobile safety app to help combat a surge in abuse and assaults on its UK telecoms engineers. Since April last year, there’s been around 700 incidents of either physical or verbal assaults and threats, including some cases where people have needed time off work to recover.

Alternative rural network provider Voneus, which has built a mix of full fibre (FTTP) and wireless (FWA) broadband networks across some remote parts of Wales and England, have published their annual accounts to the end of March 2025. The figures show that turnover increased 43% to £6.33m due to customer growth, but they suffered a loss before tax of £38m.

French internet connection benchmarking firm nPerf has this morning published the results from their annual 2026 crowdsourced study into UK mobile broadband (4G, 5G) performance. The results see both EE and Three UK being named as delivering the country’s “best Mobile Internet performances“.

Independent data analysis has recently revealed a curious trend where patches of Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) broadband network, often within urban areas and usually but not always associated to installs that require a more complex stage 2 process, suddenly vanish (i.e. no longer available to order). The issue is estimated to be impacting 0.3% of UK premises.

The Starlink service from SpaceX, which operates a mega constellation using thousands of ultrafast broadband internet satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for the UK and globally, has revealed that they’re about to start making data from their Space Situational Awareness (SSA) system, called Stargaze, available for free to other satellite operators.

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has so far deployed their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 612,000 UK premises (inc. 160,000 customers), has just put their new network live in the Cotswolds village of Kemble. The deployment forms part of Project Gigabit’s £10.81m East Gloucestershire (Lot 18) contract to upgrade 3,547 premises in hard-to-reach areas.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media and mobile operator O2 are about to begin an impactful change as part of their previous merger, which will bring their once entirely separate community discussion forums together for the first time. The operators also plan to move to a “new platform” during the process as their “agreement with the current provider is ending“.

Network operator and UK ISP CommunityFibre, which has invested c.£1bn to deploy a 5Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) network across 1.342 million homes (inc. 185k businesses within 200 metres of their network) – mostly in London, has today announced a “record year” of annual revenue growth (up 48% to £113m) and their customer base hit 429,000 (up 26% for a take-up rate of just under 32%).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning announced that they’ve just switched-on their next-generation 5G Standalone (5GSA) mobile broadband network across five “major towns” in the county of Dorset (England). The operator’s 5GSA network is now live across a total of more than 500 UK locations (70% of the population, or c.49 million people).

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has this morning published their first Mobile Network Experience Report for 2026, which measured the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services of all the primary network operators – EE, O2 and VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) – to determine which delivers the best performance. Overall, EE won most, but not all, of the categories.
