Homes in the tiny rural Northumberland (England) villages of Kirkheaton, Wallridge and surrounding communities have been told that it could be up to 3 weeks before their Openreach based broadband and phone services are fully back online. The situation follows a two-week outage that hit Kirkheaton during Storm Arwen in early 2022.

London-focused network builder and UK broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which is rolling out a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the city, has today refreshed their brand to update their look and feel. The new logo is still based around an optical fibre cable, although they’ve gone with a lot more green.

Internet and network provider Glide Group, which is currently extending their full fibre broadband network (leased lines and FTTP etc.) to serve more UK homes and businesses, has today unveiled a new office situated in Wembley Park. The goal is to better augment its connectivity offerings throughout London.

Mobile operator Vodafone has had a small refresh of their Basics plans, which are leaner versions of regular Pay Monthly tariffs that also impose some caps and bars to stop you being charged for extra features (e.g. MMS) or calls to premium rate numbers etc. (put another way, you can’t use those).

A series of complaints, most of which came from rivals Three UK and Vodafone, has prompted the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to investigate and ban several old adverts for EE’s mobile network over “misleading” promotions, which claimed that it was the “No.1” network for 5G.

A few months ago Ofcom launched a new consultation that proposed to only allow broadband ISPs to use the terms “fibre” and “full-fibre” on their sites and in contracts “if their network uses fibre-optic cables all the way from the exchange to the home” (FTTP). But feedback suggests that the biggest providers are not supportive.

Some 51,000 premises across the East Lothian settlement of Musselburgh in Scotland, including the surrounding area, will soon benefit after Netomnia, supported by UK ISP YouFibre, started a £15.3 million project to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband network across the location.

Customers of broadband and energy provider Shell Energy may like to know that the ISP, despite recently being placed up for SALE by its parent (here), has still found time to introduce a new Wi-Fi 6 capable router that is made (casing) from 100% recycled plastics. Broadband ISP BT (EE) claims that the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 has driven spikes of up to 16% in their UK data traffic as people streamed the Lionesses’ on-pitch action live, rising to a peak of 866TB (TeraBytes) during Sunday’s final against Spain – as many viewers streamed it via the BBC and ITV platforms.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK and network supplier Ericsson have today announced that they’ve concluded a successful trial of cloud-based video gaming on their new 5G Standalone (SA) network, which delivered big improvements in gaming performance via mobile broadband (i.e. download / uploads speeds, latency and jitter).

Some of Vodafone’s broadband ISP customers, specifically those covered by Openreach’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, have been unable to take a package faster than 200Mbps because of capacity problems, which for some of those affected has been going on for several years. But some issues are getting resolved.
