Alternative network operator AllPoints Fibre Networks, which is the UK wholesale division of Fern Trading’s recently consolidate alternative FTTP broadband ISP networks (Giganet, Jurassic Fibre, and Swish Fibre), has today announced that they’ve acquired Glasgow-based full fibre ISP Brillband for an undisclosed sum.

Broadband network operator Netomnia (inc. Brsk and YouFibre) will today post their latest Q3 2024 results, which among other things reveals that the annual build rate for their new 8Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) network has exceeded 1 million premises (total 1.82m, up 258k in quarter) and customer take-up hit 10.4% to total 190,000 (up 9% or 40k in quarter).

A new report from analyst firm Enders Analysis, which was today shared with ISPreview, has calculated that the 20 largest alternative UK broadband networks (i.e. BT / Openreach challengers) collectively suffered losses of around £1.304bn in 2023 (increased from £755m in 2022) – driven by high interest rates and rising build costs.

Alternative network operator Grain (Grain Connect), which has already built their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 220,000 UK premises RFS (21st May 2024) and connected 30,000 customers, has revealed that they’ve begun to expand their existing deployment in the Cheshire (England) town of Warrington.

The new Chancellor of the Labour Government, Rachel Reeves MP, has today announced her first Autumn 2024 Budget and confirmed that she would commit “over £500m of funding next year” for “improving reliable fast broadband and mobile coverage across our country, including in rural areas“.

Knaresborough-based network operator SICOM, which often works in partnership with local authorities, private enterprises, national carriers, has revealed that they’re looking to expand their open access Dark Fibre network, which is currently primarily located in several major cities across England, Scotland and Wales.

Rural broadband ISP Wildanet, which is deploying a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural parts of Cornwall and Devon (England), has joined forces with build contractor Dynamic Fibre to help pilot a new cable-laying process that could “dramatically reduce the carbon footprint” of their deployment.

A new survey of over 1,000 UK smartphone users by Omdia, which was commissioned by network testing firm Ookla (i.e. Speedtest.net, Downdetector.co.uk), has revealed some of the biggest frustrations that UK Smartphone users have with their devices, with spam calls and messages, slow-loading web pages, and network outages as the top pain points.

Alternative network operator and ISP Brsk has today announced that their 2Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which already covers “over” 700,000 UK homes and is in the process of being merged with Netomnia (here), is being expanded to cover a further 10,000 “rural” premises in 5 new locations across West Yorkshire (England).

Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave has used data gathered from across Northumberland (England) and Ceredigion (Wales) to examine the recent switch-off of 3G mobile services in those areas by Three UK, which resulted in median (average) mobile broadband download speeds rising by 22%, but “Essential Coverage” declined by 8%.

The latest Q3 2024 results from Virgin Media (O2) have been published, which shows that they’re home to 5,726,900 fixed broadband customers (up by 16.2k in Q3 vs -12.2k in Q2) and expanded their full fibre (FTTP) network to 281,100 premises – primarily via nexfibre (down from 295k in Q2). VMO2 has also sold a minority 8.3% stake in Cornerstone (worth £186m).

Mobile network operator Vodafone has today announced that they’ve teamed-up with wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave to provide “improved high-speed” 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) connectivity at Haven’s many holiday parks across Yorkshire, Norfolk and Kent in England, as well as Scotland, North Wales and various coastal communities.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has clarified to ISPreview that their Pay As You Go (PAYG) SIM plans still do NOT currently support their latest 5G (mobile broadband) network, which is despite the main product page for those plans being changed to state that customers will be able to “enjoy super-fast 4G and 5G with our Pay As You Go SIM cards.”

UK ISP BT has published the final biannual progress update for 2024 on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat maligned 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The ISP has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,248 premises (up from 7,954 in April 2024), with 215 further builds in-progress (down from 265).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) and UK tech charity Jangala have this morning announced that, over the past year, they’ve provided more than 1,000 internet-enabling “Get Boxes” to charities and local authorities across the country, which are providing free WiFi hotspots to help thousands of people affected by “data poverty” to get online.
