Dorset-UK-OMR-Gigabit-Broadband-Map-2021

The Government’s Building Digital UK programme has started another Public Review, this time for Dorset in England, which aims to identify any existing or planned commercial coverage of gigabit broadband ISP networks. This should help to establish the areas where public investment may be needed to deploy the service.

EE (BT) has followed this morning’s confusion over O2’s tougher excess data charges for EU roaming (here) by revealing that they will be reintroducing EU roaming charges for new or upgrading customers from 7th July 2021. In short, you’ll be charged £2 a day to use your allowances across 47 European countries from January 2022.

Broadband ISP BT has today said it will “vigorously defend itself” – at the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT) – against the claim of having allegedly overcharged c.2.3 million landline-only customers, which has been brought by law firm Mishcon de Reya on behalf of a former Ofcom telecoms consultant, Justin Le Patourel.

Researchers at MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics have tried to compare the estimated global data capacity of the four largest Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellite constellations – SpaceX (Starlink), Telesat, OneWeb, and Amazon (Kuiper). Interestingly, they end up closer than you might think.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today confirmed that their first pilots of ultrafast 5G Standalone (SA) network technology, which is being supported by kit from Ericsson (here), have finally gone live in parts of London, Manchester and Cardiff. The move follows last year’s trial at Coventry University in summer 2020.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) appears set to introduce a tougher Fair Usage Policy (FUP) for data (mobile broadband) usage when roaming around the EU. From 2nd August 2021, Pay Monthly customers will now be charged £3.50 for every GigaByte of data used over a cap of 25GB. But this is not a new approach.

Sky’s sibling UK ISP and TV video streaming service, NOW (NOW Broadband), has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve taken the decision to drop the popular Discovery TV channel (usually included as part of the ‘Entertainment Pass‘) and related content from their platform, which will take effect from 30th June 2021.

Openreach (BT) will today add 551 new UK cities and towns to the rollout plan for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The latest batch of locations accounts for a total of 5 million extra premises, all of which will be upgraded as part of their £15bn project to cover 25 million premises by December 2026.

A probe by the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has found “reasonable grounds for believing” that BT broke the rules by providing “inaccurate information” in response to a statutory information request, which was seeking data about EE’s Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband service for the 2019 Connected Nations report.

The UK and Welsh Governments have given their approval for a £55m digital infrastructure investment under the £1.3bn Swansea Bay City Region project, which will expand full fibre broadband and 5G mobile connectivity to benefit residents and businesses across Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Swansea.

A team of Openreach (BT) engineers will today attempt to blow – at speeds of up to 60 metres per minute – one whole 3km stretch of 16mm fibre cable across Scotland’s Forth Road Bridge, which will enable their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover premises in South and North Queensferry.

Openreach (BT) has announced that they’ve invested in infrastructure provider CommScope to supply new technology (e.g. closures and terminals) that will help to boost their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which aims to cover 25 million UK premises by December 2026 (at a cost of c.£15 billion).

Ofcom has today finalised their decision to force all UK broadband and phone providers – oddly including those that may not even deliver phone services – to offer a free (inc. zero-rated data usage), 24/7 video relay service for British Sign Language (BSL) users to contact the emergency services, via a dedicated mobile app and website.

Rupert Murdoch’s News UK (News Corp), which publishes the Sun and the Times newspapers, has reportedly expressed an interest in a partnership with BT’s Pay TV business. The telecoms giant is currently known to be considering a sale of BTSport in order to help fund their £15bn rollout of full fibre broadband.
