A recent update from OpenSignal, which uses crowd-sourced data to examine Mobile Network Operator (MNO) performance, has revealed that the United Kingdom ranks just 30th in the world for average mobile broadband download speed (19.01Mbps). By comparison South Korea came top (45.58Mbps) and India bottom (5.63Mbps).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed a number of measures that will seek to tackle concerns over airtime packages (e.g. bundling the cost of a Smartphone and Mobile plan together), which can result in consumers continuing to pay the same monthly charge even after their contract has ended.

New research from crowd-sourced data analysis company Tutela has revealed how O2, EE, Three UK and Vodafone performed – in terms of 3G and 4G mobile data (mobile broadband) connectivity – during August 2018. As usual two operators appear to dominate the results table more than most.

Ofcom has today published the technical advice that they recently submitted to Government, which proposes a number of ways in which near universal UK Mobile (3G, 4G, 5G) coverage might be achieved (public subsidy, rural wholesale access etc.), beyond what will be established via their forthcoming auction of the 700MHz band.

The UK Brexit Secretary, Dominic Raab, has this morning confirmed that both Vodafone and Three UK have committed to retain free EU mobile roaming after Brexit and that the Government would “legislate for a limit on roaming charges” in the event of a no-deal outcome.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today confirmed that they’ve begun the process of re-farming (converting) their existing 3G mobile services in the 2100MHz radio spectrum band, which means that they can instead be used to help boost 4G data (Mobile Broadband) speeds and reliability.

Mobile operator Three UK has informed us that their cheapest ‘Essential’ plans will today be withdrawn from sale in order to “simplify” their tariffs by focusing on ‘Advanced’ plans. On the upside the provider plans to cut the price of their 4G data based 30GB and 100GB plans.

RootMetrics and IHS Markit have today published the results of a new H1 2018 study into 4G and 3G mobile network operator performance across 16 of the United Kingdom’s “most populated metropolitan markets” (cities), which found that Belfast was the best and London the worst.

Customers of mobile operator Vodafone‘s pay monthly 4G ‘Red Entertainment‘ plans will soon be able to enjoy cost free global roaming in a total of 77 destinations when a further 29 countries are added to the list, including some big locations such as the USA, South Africa, Canada and most of of the Caribbean.

The latest “scientific” H1 2018 examination of 4G and 3G mobile network operator performance across the United Kingdom, which was conducted by RootMetrics and IHS Markit, has today seen EE and Three UK come top with a quality score of 96 and 93 out of 100 (respectively).

Mobile operator Three UK has published their H1 2018 results, which among other things revealed that monthly Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) data usage per customer grew by 10% during the first six months of the year to total 7.6GB (GigaBytes) and that’s compared with a rise of +7% for the whole of 2017.

The Prince’s Countryside Fund is currently said to be working on a new ‘Village Survival Guide‘, which comes after the charity surveyed 3,000 people in rural parts of the United Kingdom and found that better broadband and mobile (4G) coverage was one of three changes that such communities desperately need.
