A probe conducted by the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has found “reasonable grounds for believing” that Lycamobile may have breached industry regulations for EU mobile roaming, not least by levying a surcharge and applying overly strict 4G / 3G data roaming limits (mobile broadband).

The CEO of Ofcom, Sharon White, yesterday told the Connected Britain event in London that to provide good mobile network (4G etc.) coverage across virtually all of the UK landmass would cost up to around £6 billion and is likely to require some form of cross subsidy.

The latest 2018 Consumer Mobile Experience report from Ofcom has used crowdsourced data to reveal some interesting details about the performance of 3G and 4G mobile networks in the United Kingdom, which among other things finds that 86% of urban vs only 73% of rural users are satisfied with their service.

The telecoms regulator has today published an update to last year’s annual Connected Nations report, which uses more recent data from 2018 to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. For example, “full fibre” (FTTH/P) now reaches 4% (1.2 million premises).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has completed the construction of its 90th brand new mast site in Scotland within the last 12 months, which has helped to boost their 4G landmass (geographic) network coverage in the country to more than 75%. By comparison EE’s overall landmass coverage of the UK is 90%.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results from their latest 2018 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Utility Warehouse top with a customer score of 84% and they were followed by giffgaff (81%). Sadly Vodafone retains the bottom spot.

Do we still need a fixed line telephone (voice) service? A new ISPreview survey of 1,911 readers has found that only 14.5% still use a landline phone service for making most of their calls and 67.2% said they’d get rid of it if the service wasn’t still needed by most ISPs for home broadband.

Ookla has published a new table, which reveals how much your Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) speeds could drop within the EU when you roam outside of your home country. For example, the average local mobile download speed in the UK is 26.16Mbps but this drops by -19.4% (21.08Mbps) when roaming.

Mobile operator EE has announced that they’ve “filled in” 12,000 square kilometres of mobile not-spots in the last 12 months, which forms part of their aim to extend geographic (landmass) 4G network coverage to 95% of the UK by the end of December 2020 (currently 90%).
