The telecoms regulator has today launched its first “crowdsourced research project“, which asks owners of Android Smartphones’ to download its new Ofcom Mobile Research app, which will help them to build up a more accurate picture of Mobile and WiFi network performance across the United Kingdom.

The European Commission has today proposed a revised Fair Use Policy (FUP) for their plan to end EU mobile roaming charges from 15th June 2017 (i.e. any call, text or data allowances will come from your domestic plan), which replaces the one that was withdrawn almost as soon as it was announced.

Customers of Vodafone’s mobile network may be pleased to learn that the operator has today introduced a new call barring technology, which is designed to block hundreds of thousands of bulk nuisance and scam calls from entering their network (false PPI offers, missed call scams etc.).

Tucked deep within the new Digital Economy Bill 2016-17 is a measure that will give Ofcom enough power to impose a financial penalty (worth up to 10% of a company’s gross revenue) on Mobile Network Operators’ (MNO) or Fixed Wireless ISPs that fail to deliver on a coverage obligation.

RootMetrics have today published their latest report into the Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance of network operators EE, Three UK, O2 and Vodafone across 16 of the United Kingdom’s primary cities. Overall Liverpool came top of the table, while Hull is still stuck at the bottom.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today launched its new Community Indoor Sure Signal (CISS) project, which will use fixed line broadband connections to help deliver 3G mobile coverage to 100 rural community hubs (pubs, village halls etc.) where signal quality is usually weak or non-existent.

The national telecoms regulator has today produced an updated study of 4G based Mobile Broadband speeds in central London, which specifically looks at the performance impact of the latest Category 4 vs 6 (LTE-Advanced) networks. Once again EE wins the speed crown, but Vodafone are catching up.
