Mobile operator Vodafone have announced that their Rural Open Sure Signal (Femtocell) technology has just been rolled out to two more rural villages in Wales, Bryneglwys and Moylegrove, which means they can finally access 3G based Mobile Broadband and voice services.
The service works by harnessing an areas existing fixed line broadband connectivity in order to distribute and boost outdoor 3G (sadly it doesn’t do 4G) mobile signals, although this is often only viable in locations that already have reasonable fixed line connectivity and this isn’t always available. Luckily that wasn’t a problem this time around.
David Jones, MP for Clwyd West, said:
“Access to reliable mobile phone coverage has become essential in our daily lives so I am delighted that Vodafone has responded to the needs of our community and Brynegwyls will receive a much better service. Connecting communities and helping local businesses is absolutely vital to the rural areas in Wales and getting access to 3G mobile coverage is a big step towards achieving this.”
So far the related ROSS units across the communities have already taken an average of over 75 mobile calls and supported over 5,000 data sessions a day. Vodafone UK are working to provide reliable mobile access into up to 100 rural communities in UK mobile not-spot locations using the same method and over 40 have so far been completed.
