A new Deloitte report, which was commissioned by the Mobile Operators Association, has claimed that up to £270m could be saved by updating the current Electronic Communications Code so that UK mobile operators can improve their network coverage without having to pay huge fees to install wireless masts on private land.

The Swindon Borough Council’s recently approved a £1.9m project with UKB Networks Ltd., which will push “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage out to 99.4% of local premises by 2016 via a fixed wireless 4G (LTE) network instead of BT’s fixed line hybrid-fibre (FTTC/P) infrastructure, is facing a challenge from rival politicians.

BT’s share price is likely to continuing heading upwards next week after reports from industry sources suggested that the national UK telecoms giant would finally detail their plans to introduce a new consumer 4G mobile service, which alongside EE will aim to undercut rivals and initially only be offered to the ISPs existing broadband subscribers.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has made the unsurprising announcement that their new 4G (LTE at 800MHz and 2.6GHz) based Mobile Broadband network will be expanded to reach more than 94% of the Welsh population, with Caerphilly, Cardiff, Connah’s Quay, Llanelli, Newport and Penarth being some of the latest to go live.

Back in 2009 the European Commission picked Inmarsat Ventues and Solaris Mobile to provide Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) across Europe using the 1980-2010MHz and 2170-2200MHz radio spectrum bands. But so far neither company has provided the services and the UK telecoms regulator has now issued both with a strict ultimatum, use it or £ lose it.

Meanwhile rivals are demanding Dark Fibre access and other concessions.

A new Arqiva commissioned survey of 2,000 UK residents has explored how consumers perceive public WiFi services vs 3G and 4G cellular network connectivity. The study found that almost two thirds (58%) of 4G subscribers would consider swapping to a different network provider if they supplied public WiFi access as part of their subscription package.

Mobile operator EE, which could shortly become a part of the BT Group, has announced that their long planned trial of ultrafast 400Mbps capable 4G LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) based Mobile Broadband technology with Qualcomm and Huawei, which they’ve dubbed 4G+, will next month go live at Wembley Stadium in London.

The national telecoms regulator has today carried out its promise to once again review the plans for a massive hike in annual licence fees on the 900MHz and 1800MHz radio spectrum bands, but they’ve also been quick to warn that the recent coverage agreement between mobile operators and the Government is “unlikely to have a material effect“.
