Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that customers of their ‘Red’ 4G (LTE) based mobile voice and Internet services in the United Kingdom will now also be able to make use of the same connectivity in 23 destinations worldwide.

UK Broadband Ltd (PCCW), which is the parent of London-based wireless broadband ISP Relish, has officially been granted an indefinite extension to its spectrum licence for use of 40MHz in the 3.4GHz band that is being used to help deliver 4G (LTE) based fixed wireless and mobile broadband services.

Sadly not all hotels offer a WiFi Internet service and some even charge excessive amounts for access, although in most of these cases it’s often possible to get your computer online by using a Smartphone to setup a personal WiFi hotspot via a Mobile Broadband link (3G, 4G). At least it is unless your hotel decides to deliberately block personal WiFi.

BT has denied that its plans to launch a new consumer focused 4G mobile service, which will also harness the capabilities of their existing WiFi hotspots, are at risk of delay due to a series of technical challenges with getting the new network to function properly.

Mobile network operator EE has started October 2014 by announcing that another batch of 18 towns across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England can now receive their “superfast” 4G (4GEE – LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband service, including Prince Harry’s old training grounds at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst.

The Government’s Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Sajid Javid, has today told the annual Conservative Party Conference that having better broadband Internet connectivity than the largest EU states is “never enough” and he wants the United Kingdom to “compete with the likes of Japan and South Korea“, where ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) networks are common.

BTOpenreach recently completed a field trial of a new Mobile Infill Infrastructure Solution (MiiS), which is designed to leverage BT’s existing fixed line network in order to deliver mobile services into areas that suffer from “non-existent or patchy” coverage, and has now made the product available to mobile operators and ISPs across the United Kingdom.

Mobile operator EE (Everything Everywhere) has quietly announced that next year’s delayed commercial launch of their new 300Mbps capable 4G (LTE-Advanced) based Mobile Broadband service will also be accompanied by another trial to push the networks top performance up to a staggering 400Mbps (Megabits per second).

As expected the Government appears to have failed in its first tentative bid to boost mobile voice and Mobile Broadband coverage around the United Kingdom by attempting to encourage greater sharing of masts (network infrastructure) in the hope of fostering a national roaming policy.

Mobile operator EE has teamed up with Nokia Networks and Intel to test the new Liquid Applications technology, which among other things can redefine the role of base stations (these distribute the mobile signal to your phone) by adding cloud technology in a way that could deliver some big Mobile Broadband (4G / 3G) performance improvements to customers.

More news from mobile operators today after Vodafone announced that their new 4G based Mobile Broadband network, which since this time last year has been expanded to cover over 300 cities and towns as well as “thousands of smaller communities” across the United Kingdom, was also being made available to their Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) customers.

Mobile operator O2 has celebrated the first anniversary of their 4G (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network deployment by confirming that more than 240 towns and cities across the United Kingdom can now access the new service, representing a population coverage of 45% (up from 41% in April 2014).

As expected the national UK telecoms regulator has today allowed O2, Three UK, EE and Vodafone to improve the coverage and capacity of their 3G (UMTS) and 4G (LTE + WiMAX) based Mobile Broadband networks by boosting the maximum permissible base station transmit power in the 1800MHz radio spectrum band by +3dB.
