The Full Fibre Northern Ireland (FFNI) Consortium, which is made up of 10 councils outside Belfast and the Business Services Organisation (BSO), has confirmed the completion of their project to rollout a new full fibre broadband network to connect 887 public sector sites. The network itself was built by UK ISP Fibrus.

The UK Government’s latest Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has today used his Autumn Statement 2022 to, among other things, allay fears that he might cut funding for major national gigabit broadband and mobile infrastructure projects by committing to ensure that such projects remain “funded as promised“.

The Welsh Government (WG) has responded to a series of recommendations on improving broadband and phone connectivity that were made by the Welsh Parliament’s Climate Change, Environment, and Infrastructure Committee (CCEIC) in August 2022 (here), albeit mostly only to parrot existing plans, positions and policies.

The Essex County Council in England has committed £700,000 from their budget to help top-up the funding provided under the UK Government’s rural focused Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which means that poorly served homes can now get up to £8,500 toward installing a gigabit-capable connection from an ISP.

Independent rural broadband ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has announced the appointment of Neil Conaghan as their new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The move is part of the provider’s effort to expand their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 premises (here) in the North of England and Scottish Borders by around the end of 2025.

The rural Wilbraham (Great Wilbraham and Little Wilbraham) community in Cambridgeshire (England) is celebrating today after an alternative network ISP, Cambridge Fibre, was able to successfully rollout a multi-gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the village.

The latest H1 2022 report into the broadband coverage of new build UK homes reveals that 99.03% of houses constructed during the first half of 2022 were connected to a gigabit-capable network (using full fibre FTTP and Hybrid Fibre Coax), which falls slightly to 98.03% when only looking at FTTP.

The latest Q2 FY23 results to September 2022 have today been released by the BT Group, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 8.76 million premises (up by 805k in the quarter vs 763k last quarter). Meanwhile, EE’s 5G customers topped 8.157 million (up from 7.74m).

Some 40 homes on the remote Scottish Isle of Coll, which is home to around 200 people, have been left without broadband until at least Monday because Openreach’s engineers cannot safely reach the island by boat in order to repair their niche Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) network. Neos Networks has today announced the completion of their £10.5m state aid funded Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) contract to rollout a new 275km long gigabit-capable Dark Fibre broadband network to connect 192 public sector sites (hospitals, council buildings etc.) in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
