The Suffolk County Council (SCC) today claims to have signed the United Kingdom’s first Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) based Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract with BT, which aims to extend the coverage of the operators “fibre optic broadband” (FTTC/P) network to 95% of local homes and businesses “before 2018“.

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has suggested that there is an “increasingly compelling argument” for fixed line broadband download speeds of 10Mbps (Megabits per second) to be considered a requirement for an “effective quality of service,” especially where there is simultaneous use of the connection by different services or users within the home.

The £18.8m Superfast Leicestershire project in central England has announced the next batch of 38 Phase Two communities that can expect to benefit from the state aid supported roll-out of BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, which is anticipated to reach 96% of local homes and businesses by March 2016.

Villagers in the rural Gloucestershire (England) communities of Chalford and Bussage are attempting to raise £30,000 from their own pockets after BT refused to upgrade two local street cabinets, which together serve around 370 homes, with superfast broadband (FTTC) because they were deemed to be “commercially not viable“. Meanwhile other areas could soon get 330Mbps FTTP.

The latest survey of 2,000 adults in the United Kingdom by Halifax, which queried what kind of impact broadband connectivity would have on house buying, found that 23% would attempt to negotiate a lower price if the property had a poor broadband connection, while 20% would pay more for a home with “good broadband” and 18% said broadband had been merely a consideration during past moves.

In its final report the RSA’s City Growth Commission, which has been looking at ways of boosting the United Kingdom’s long-term economic prospects, has today recommended that the Government attempt to “emulate” Singapore by aiming for ultrafast broadband speeds of 1Gbps [1000 Megabits] “in the near future” across our cities.

The £27.35 million Superfast Staffordshire project in the West Midlands (England) has now helped around 13,000 local homes and businesses (mostly in Rugeley) to gain access to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network and its future deployment focus is now slowly switching towards the sensitive rural Moorlands (e.g. Peak District).

Plans to extend the joint £94 million Connecting Devon and Somerset (England) project have been cast into doubt again after several district councils expressed concern at BT’s requirement that they sign “gagging orders” (Non-Disclosure Agreements) and the operators alleged inability to guarantee that residents in their area would receive access to faster broadband speeds.

The latest research from Point Topic and Adroit Economics has suggested that SME businesses could benefit to the tune of 40bn Euros (£32bn+ Gross Value Added) by 2020 thanks to the roll-out of “superfast broadband” services, with firms in the United Kingdom predicted to be one of the top three performers with GVA of 6bn+ Euros (£4.75bn+). But before too long businesses may be asking for 250Mbps+.

The Superfast Dorset project in central southern England has today announced the next batch of telephone exchange areas that will soon benefit from an upgrade to BT’s latest “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network as part of the programmes third roll-out phase, which is expected to help another 9,000 local premises to connect.

The Superfast Cymru project has this morning announced the next batch of communities that, from September 2015 onwards, will be upgraded to support BT’s “fast fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network. The announcement means that related work is now effectively planned to take place in every telephone exchange across Wales.

Residents of the remote Shetland Islands community will be pleased to learn that the first 17 street cabinets (serving 4,000 premises) equipped with BT’s up to 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband technology have gone live today. The work forms part of the wider £410m Digital Scotland partnership.

The joint £94m BT and Connecting Devon and Somerset project in England has successfully used a “pioneering new” 4 kilometre microwave radio link to help supply capacity for an FTTC (up to 80Mbps) equipped Street Cabinet in the remote Devon village of Northlew, which would have otherwise required the installation of an expensive fibre optic cable.
