The State Opening of Parliament – often referred to as the “King’s Speech” – took place today, which saw the new UK Government set out their agenda for the coming session. The speech included mentions of several bills that could potentially support the expansion of gigabit broadband and 5G mobile networks, as well as toughen cyber security and Digital Verification Services.

The UK Infrastructure Bank (UKIB), which was setup by the previous government to help crowd-in private investment for infrastructure projects, has today committed £35m to help alternative network provider Wildanet accelerate their rollout of gigabit-capable full fibre broadband across South West England.

The First Minister of Wales, Vaughan Gething (Labour), has jumped on the recent 2024 General Election result by indicating that it gives them a “window of opportunity” to re-engage with the new Labour-led UK Government – in the hope of “putting right what’s gone wrong” with Project Gigabit‘s broadband roll-out plan. But big changes risk big delays.

CityFibre have today announced that the first customer has just gone live on their new full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Cambridgeshire (England) under the £69m state aid supported Project Gigabit rollout contract (Lot 5), which began its construction phase back in February 2024 (contract was awarded in March 2023).

The new UK Government is off to a rapid start this week and has already appointed Peter Kyle (MP) to be the new Secretary of State at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), which oversees many of the country’s public broadband and mobile infrastructure projects. But bigger news on planning is expected from the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, today.

ISPreview’s latest biannual UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H1 2024 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 67.68% of premises (up from 60.54% in H2 2023) and 83.39% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 79.86%). The European Commission has this week published their annual 2024 ‘Broadband Coverage in Europe’ study, which reveals how the EU’s fixed gigabit broadband and 5G mobile networks compare across all of its 27 countries, plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme has awarded the £73.47 million (state aid) regional contract for North Yorkshire (Lot 31) in England to ISP Quickline, which will aim to extend their 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) network to almost 40,000 additional premises in hard to reach rural areas.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative gigabit broadband providers, has today published a new manifesto. The document sets out the key recommendations that it thinks the next government will need to implement – within the first 100 days in office – to help boost network roll-outs.

The recent meeting of an overview and scrutiny committee in West Devon (England) saw local councillors, as well as some residents, heap criticism on the state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme and contracted UK ISP Airband for being “inefficient and chaotic” in their delivery of faster broadband networks.

Broadband ISP Wildanet, which in January 2023 secured the £36m state aid fuelled Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract to cover more than 19,250 hard-to-reach premises across rural parts of Cornwall in South West England (here), has today revealed that they’ve already covered 3,500 premises across 9 FTTP build locations.
