The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today confirmed that they’re tripling the value of the vouchers they issue to homes under their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which helps those in rural areas to get a gigabit-capable internet connection installed. Businesses will also see a smaller boost.

The fourth and so far, largest, contract under the Government’s new £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme – worth £108 million – has today been awarded to UK ISP Fibrus, which will upgrade broadband for more than 60,000 hard-to-reach homes and businesses across Cumbria (England).

The UK Government has today launched a series of new trials that aims to leverage the new generation of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in order to deliver faster and more capable broadband connectivity to some of the remotest locations, which full fibre (FTTP) would otherwise struggle to reach.

Openreach, supported by funding from the Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS), has completed the rollout of their gigabit-capable full fibre network to cover the tiny rural Dumfriesshire village of Mouswald – reflecting just 57 properties. It is the first and, surprisingly, “largest” of 7 community builds being delivered via a similar approach this year.

The UK Government’s new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill (PSTI) is finally set to become law after passing through both houses of parliament this week. The new law will, among other things, make it easier for full fibre broadband and mobile operators to upgrade, share and deploy new infrastructure.

A new National Connectivity Alliance (the NCA) has been launch today, which for the first time brings together UK telecommunications providers (mobile and broadband), infrastructure providers, landowners and their professional advisers. The goal is to collaborate on areas of mutual interest and that may boost the rollout of new networks.

Openreach (BT) has informed ISPreview that its Fibre Community Partnership (FCP) scheme, which works with disadvantaged parts of England, Wales and Scotland to help co-fund the deployment of new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, will become available again for new applicants “early” in 2023.

The Full Fibre Northern Ireland (FFNI) Consortium, which is made up of 10 councils outside Belfast and the Business Services Organisation (BSO), has confirmed the completion of their project to rollout a new full fibre broadband network to connect 887 public sector sites. The network itself was built by UK ISP Fibrus.

The UK Government’s latest Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has today used his Autumn Statement 2022 to, among other things, allay fears that he might cut funding for major national gigabit broadband and mobile infrastructure projects by committing to ensure that such projects remain “funded as promised“.

The Essex County Council in England has committed £700,000 from their budget to help top-up the funding provided under the UK Government’s rural focused Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which means that poorly served homes can now get up to £8,500 toward installing a gigabit-capable connection from an ISP.

Independent rural broadband ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has announced the appointment of Neil Conaghan as their new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The move is part of the provider’s effort to expand their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 premises (here) in the North of England and Scottish Borders by around the end of 2025.

The latest H1 2022 report into the broadband coverage of new build UK homes reveals that 99.03% of houses constructed during the first half of 2022 were connected to a gigabit-capable network (using full fibre FTTP and Hybrid Fibre Coax), which falls slightly to 98.03% when only looking at FTTP.

The latest Q2 FY23 results to September 2022 have today been released by the BT Group, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 8.76 million premises (up by 805k in the quarter vs 763k last quarter). Meanwhile, EE’s 5G customers topped 8.157 million (up from 7.74m).

Some 40 homes on the remote Scottish Isle of Coll, which is home to around 200 people, have been left without broadband until at least Monday because Openreach’s engineers cannot safely reach the island by boat in order to repair their niche Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) network. Some homes have now been offline for 3 weeks.
