The third Local Supplier contract under the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme – worth £7.3m – has today been awarded to rural ISP GoFibre (BorderLink), which will upgrade broadband for more than 3,750 hard-to-reach premises across North Northumberland (England).

Neos Networks has today announced the completion of their £10.5m state aid funded Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) contract to rollout a new 275km long gigabit-capable Dark Fibre broadband network to connect 192 public sector sites (hospitals, council buildings etc.) in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) team has informed ISPs of several forthcoming changes to their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which helps those in rural areas to get a gigabit-capable internet connection installed. The big news is that the maximum voucher values are to be increased.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has launched a Public Review to confirm the existing and planned gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure coverage within parts of the Highland Council Area, which relates to the authority’s investment under the new Inverness and Highland City-Region Deal (IH-CRD).

The Government’s (DCMS) Building Digital UK team has published a new batch of Public Reviews (PR) for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which covers a total of nine contractable regions in England, such as Dorset, Greater London, Merseyside and Greater Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham and more.

The UK Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, has today published a new Growth Plan 2022, which proposes to “liberate the private sector” by encouraging investment (i.e. removing barriers to the flow of private capital) and boosting infrastructure by “liberalising the planning system and streamlining consultation and approval requirements“.

The UK Government has issued their response to last year’s technical consultation on changes to the existing ‘Building Regulations 2010‘, which sets out their final position on the legal framework for making it mandatory for property developers to ensure that new build homes are constructed with support for faster broadband.

The Welsh Government (WG) has shared a Q2 2022 progress update on their £52.5 million Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with Openreach (BT), which reveals that a total of 32,949 extra premises (up from 29,959 in Q1) have now gained access to a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

Low-cost broadband ISP TalkTalk has called on the government to be more proactive in encouraging the take-up of new full fibre and other gigabit speed capable networks. One of their proposals calls for a national information and awareness campaign to help highlight the benefits of such connections.
