The Cambridgeshire County Council has today revealed that the next phase of their Connecting Cambridgeshire scheme in England will aim to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage to 99% of homes and businesses in the county by the end of 2020.

The Government has today set out their future Digital Strategy for the United Kingdom, which aims to “create a world-leading digital economy” and “deliver world-class connectivity” but most of their broadband infrastructure commitments are re-announcements of existing policy.

The Staffordshire County Council has established a new £400,000 Community Fibre Partnership Support Fund (CFPSF), which aims to help remote rural communities to raise enough investment to get a “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network installed by Openreach (BT).

Several Government MPs have hinted that the forthcoming 2017 Budget announcement on the 8th March will see a rural-focused reincarnation of the Connection Voucher scheme, which gifted grants of up to £3,000 to help smaller UK businesses get a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service installed.

Better late than never. The Department for Culture, Media & Sport has published a useful list of ISP suppliers for their rural focused Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme, which offers a subsidy worth around £350 to properties that struggle to receive a minimum download speed of 2Mbps.

The Government’s Digital Economy Bill linked proposal to introduce a 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation for broadband has taken an interesting twist today after the House of Lords approved a radical proposal, which raises the minimum download speed to 30Mbps (6Mbps upload).

The joint Merseyside Connected project with Openreach (BT) has today announced that an additional 3,000 homes and businesses in the region will be put within reach of an FTTC/P based “fibre broadband” network by the end of 2018, which is thanks to a £2 million reinvestment (clawback) boost.

The UK Internet Services Providers’ Association (ISPA) has told the Government that if they wish to boost the roll-out of ultrafast “full fibre” FTTP/H broadband networks then the “most important factor” will be to reduce the high costs and admin burden of existing regulatory barriers (wayleaves etc.).

The Superfast Northamptonshire project in England has today signed two new contracts – worth £10.23m – with rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear, which will enable the provider to roll-out their ultrafast (1Gbps+) Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network to 6,330 premises.

The £15m Get Digital Faster project, which is already working to extend the coverage of Openreach’s (BT) “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to 47,000+ premises in the Greater Manchester (England) area, has announced that a further 2,900 will also benefit thanks to clawback of £1.4m.

The Welsh Government has revealed that the uptake of their two broadband voucher schemes, which are designed to help businesses and rural homes gain access to a faster connection, has been fairly small and as a result some tweaks may be required in order to boost uptake.
