UK Gov Commits £4.94m to Help Deploy Fibre Broadband on Montserrat

The British Overseas Territory of Montserrat, which is a small Caribbean island that was largely devastated after the Soufrière Hills volcano began erupting from mid-1995, has won £4.94m from UK Department for International Development in order to roll-out “superfast broadband” on the island.

Cornwall UK Start Phase 2 Roll-out of Superfast Broadband to 8000+ Premises

The £7.6m follow-on Superfast Cornwall contract, which is working with Openreach (BT) to expand the local availability of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) to at least another 8,600 premises by “early 2018“, has finally begun its roll-out. So far 1,450 premises in 25 communities have been reached.

The Government’s £1.7bn Broadband Delivery UK project, which has been deploying “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to 95% of UK premises by 2017/18 and then 97% by 2020, has confirmed that £442m is being returned by BT (Openreach) for reinvestment to help cover another 600,000 premises.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project has today signed a major new £62.25m deal with rural ISP Gigaclear, which will enable the provider to roll-out their 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network to 35,225 of the hardest to reach premises in the region by 2019.

89% of UK Covered by 30Mbps Broadband, But Only 1.7% See “Full Fibre”

Ofcom has today published their annual Connected Nations 2016 report, which confirms that 89% of UK premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband service (up from 83% in 2015), with take-up hitting 31% (up from 27%). But only 1.7% (498K premises) can get “full fibre” (FTTP/H).

Rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has announced that their state aid supported and 1000Mbps+ capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband roll-out in the Epping Forest area of Essex (England) has now reached 2,000 premises passed of its 4,500 goal for the end of 2017.

Hampshire UK Targets 97.4% Superfast Broadband Coverage by 2019

The Hampshire Superfast Broadband project in England, which recently worked with Openreach (BT) to expand “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage to 90% of the county (59,500 extra premises), has given the green light to a £7.8m extension that will bring the availability to 97.4% by 2019.

Surrey UK Set to Push Beyond 96% Superfast Broadband Coverage

Surrey is special because it’s one of the few counties in England to have already delivered over 96% coverage of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) and as a result they were able to skip the Government’s second Broadband Delivery UK phase. But the council has this week agreed to go even further.

Global Average Internet Speeds Top 6.3Mbps as UK Falls to 14.9Mbps

Akamai‘s latest Q3-2016 State of the Internet study finds that the average fixed line broadband download speed in the United Kingdom has fallen slightly from 15Mbps in Q2 to 14.9Mbps in Q3, which compares with a global speed of 6.3Mbps (up 2.3% from Q2). But the UK’s country ranking held at 20th.

EU Establish New £420m Fund to Upgrade Broadband Infrastructure

The European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have today unveiled plans for a new €500m (£420m at today’s rate) Connecting Europe Broadband Fund (CEBF), which over the next 10 years will help the EU to reach their “Gigabit Society” objectives (e.g. 100Mbps+ for all by 2025).
