The popular broadband-based Movie and TV video streaming service, Netflix, has today updated their website to hike the monthly prices across all three of their plans for customers again. New customers will see the change immediately, while the timing for existing customers will depend upon your billing date (usually following 30 days’ after notification).

In short, ‘Standard with Ads‘ will shoot up from £5.99 to £7.99 per month, while ‘Standard‘ increases a bit from £12.99 to £13.99 and ‘Premium‘ sees a jump from £18.99 to £20.99. The ‘Extra Member without Ads‘ add-on has also increased from £5.99 to £6.99 per month, while their ‘Extra Member with Ads‘ option goes from £4.99 to £5.99.

Customers who don’t like this increase may cancel or downgrade their plan – details here.

I set sail a while ago, then go Netflix via VM, can’t say we watch it a lot, mostly YouTube / plex “stuff” so much easier to just find a series and binge that one tbh, it’s such. Shame, Amazon is one that’s getting annoying too with the ads >.< trying to get the partner to cancel that but likes the delivery, only need to spend £20 odd for free delivery, do the preorder drink on anything <£20 🙂

  2. Avatar photo Name says:

hahaha, I am still sharing Netflix account via the VPN with friends but can’t remember when I was watching something recently there. I guess it is time to stop subscribing it.

    1. Avatar photo >M says:

I had Netflix “cheap” since around 2018 was paying a max £5-6 a month for the top package, they eventually caught on and stopped it :/ to much hassle now trying to get it cheap for it to be cancelled and then requesting the money back via the bank lol

  3. Avatar photo FANNY ADAMS says:

Not so cheap as they thought it was going to be, and the terrestrial broadcasters hung on far longer than they thought. It’s these streamers that pushed production costs through the roof with their mega budgets.

Come on cash cows, just pay up to American Corp. Inc.

Rip off Britain i have gone back to watching Dvds buying more dvds But huge jump in Price of DVD Players not a lot of choice in shops

  5. Avatar photo BenInLondon says:

Time to do some house cleaning. I guess I can always subscribe for a month if anything good turns up.

    1. Avatar photo Big Dave says:

Best way with Netflix. Do a months binge watching and cancel.

  6. Avatar photo Lycaerix says:

Long live running your own media server and ripping your own libraries (I said ripping; not pirating).

  7. Avatar photo Tom says:

They suck you in, get you in to a habit then raise the price.
Rather than putting the base plan up with adverts, why not just increase the amount of adverts shown and gain the additional income they think they need that way. There are a lot of people struggling. greed, simple.

    1. Avatar photo Dan says:

Habit of what? Searching for something worth watching? I’m subscribing for a month twice a year and after two weeks there is nothing interesting to watch. The same with Prime, and then Disney and Paramount once a year. And I have AppleTV for free from my bank account.

  8. Avatar photo Ad47uk says:

I dropped Netflix a few years back, I dropped Disney+ last year. People will stop using the services, but then the amount some people pay for Sky, maybe not.

I will stick with Amazon and ITVX for the moment.
More than enough on them, plus 4OD for me. Makes me wonder how people gets the time to watch everything.

    1. Avatar photo Big Dave says:

I do Prime but it’s mainly for the free next day delivery. Certainly wouldn’t bother if it was only for the TV. YouTube is my biggest source of entertainment these days mainly for the tech channels and guess what it’s free.

    2. Avatar photo Ad47uk says:

Prime offers video, music, next day delivery and kindle books if you have a kindle. so pretty good for the money, there is a few good things on prime video.

I use Youtube, but the adverts are getting more annoying.

I like ITVx, there are a fair bit on that I like, which is why I decided to pay for the year.

    3. Avatar photo Jon Norris says:

For Youtube without ads use the Firefox player or Tizentube.

    4. Avatar photo Jennifer90s says:

@ad47uk I couldn’t agree more. Prime is arguably the best value at £9 and the £3 bolt on for ad free + Dolby vision/atmos makes it to £12 which is what I pay.
happy to pay it because as you say:

      -next day deliveries
      -Kindle
      -Music
      -TV and shows
-Prime gaming (loot box thing which I have used before)

Netflix is getting greedy, I now get it via EE and I pay £7 to up it to premium. Happy to do that. and HBO max is bundled (can’t upgrade it but would not anyway).

I do also subscribe to Apple One Premier – expensive but I do save alot

-Apple news+ – isn’t just news, it contains magazines which for the most part are £5 is a pop physically.
      -apple TV I use
-apple music I use at work, gym and in the car (via carplay)
-apple fitness, I now use thanks to apple TV box.
-wasn’t interested in apple arcade but have dabbled as its included – and i’ll say it isn’t bad, if you want a quick ‘arcadey’ fix it does that well.

I don’t sub to anything else, Paramount is weak but if that merges with Warner, then Max would be better.

  9. Avatar photo Mark says:

These streaming giants need to wake up and realise they are no longer in a position to keep upping their prices… 10 years ago they were a godsend as they were easier and more convenient. Downloading films via other means was a nightmare as connections were slower, hard drives were smaller and you’d have to waste time burning them to discs etc. That isn’t the case anymore! I can buy a 4TB external hard drive and a cheap Android TV box for £120 and fill it with 60+ 4K films in less than 10 hours on my 900Mb connection. Piracy is up by 25% in the last 5 years and that figure will keep rising as more people get faster connections and streaming giants up their prices!

  10. Avatar photo JG says:

TV has gone downhill in general over the years, Sky and Virgin being even more expensive and phasing out satellite and cable services to dodge you “fast forward the adverts” on recordings, Netflix and its competitors are actively known for inconvenient price rises and still have to pay to watch ads. “Freeview” you really got to pay a licence for has increased and fcked pensioners off by making most of them pay in recent years. BBC with its scandals not helping also.

    1. Avatar photo Ad47uk says:

Yep, TV have certainly got worse, one of the reasons I dropped the TV licence and don’t bother with linear TV. Subscriptions at least it is easy to change from one to the other.

    2. Avatar photo FANNY ADAMS says:

Minimum term contracts of 12months or 18 will be coming…….only way they cant stop people from binging in a month then cancelling. At least the license fee goes into UK programming and keeps a whole production eco-system going which generates tax revenue. Because of mega budgets designed to destroy terrestrial broadcasters, the cost of production went through the roof and that’s why terrestrial broadcasters are mainly suffering from. The goal of streamers is to get rid of any free to air, then wind down to a pay per view model eventually for prime content and ongoing subcription for back catalogue, or content that is new but not premimum drama for example.

    3. Avatar photo Ad47uk says:

@FANNY ADAMS, If they have 12 month subscription there will always be a choice I think to stay monthly. That is what a lot of people like about them, they can dip in and out when they like. I did subscribe to ITVx for 12 months, something I would not normally do, but It is a little cheaper. Streamers are there, so people can get things they would not get in other ways.
The majority of content that is on normal TV is to be honest rubbish. Look at what was on BBC1 today, I just had a look to see and it was awful, certainly not what a Saturday used to be. BBC 2 was no better and the commercial channels, well, I know the licence don’t pay for them, but you need a licence to watch them live. Sunday is no better.
Gong for streaming and dropping the TV licence was one of the better choices I made.
I am not paying £180 a year for something I will not use or may find something worth watching once in a blue moon.

If it did come to the stage of 12 or 18 months contracts, I would just cope with you tube and some of the free stuff out there. I don’t watch a lot of TV anyway.,

    4. Avatar photo Big Dave says:

@FANNY ADAMS will probably do what Now TV do and offer a discount in return for signing up for 12 months.

  11. Avatar photo Luuta says:

The price is becoming extortionate. At £20pm, I’d have to watch 4-5 films to make it worth my while. I buy DVDs second hand because they’re now too expensive to buy new. There’s only so much money most of us can afford before it becomes untenable and to be frank, most of the output from Western film studios is excreable. I’m fed up of watching remakes of comic book stories that never end, but simply go round and round like a hamster wheel. I will miss Korean TV, but most of that is pretty formulaic, too. An easy watch on Netflix at £10-£15pm, but the number of quality productions has to be much higher for me to continue watching, particularly as I’m now retired on pennies. Instead, I may watch Rakuten for the occasional outstanding series they may show, and leave as soon as I’ve seen it to keep costs within reason.

Too many subscription models for everything from everyone, with no one actually owning anything any more. There’s only so much money you can squeeze from a stone and these companies continue going, making millions for their shareholders, while their customers become increasingly poor. It’s time they reign in their greed, to be honest.

  12. Avatar photo FANNY ADAMS says:

Expect 12 or 18 months contracts soon to lock you in. Just takes one major player to do this and they all copy. Otherwise, people just binge for a month and they don’t make money…….

    1. Avatar photo No Name says:

This is what will come next.

The whole thing has gone full circle. We are back at cable and satellite, just this time you need a broadband connection too.

    2. Avatar photo ACdeag says:

Now TV already doing that with 6 month contracts

  13. Avatar photo Chris says:

Still cheaper than the bbc I have to pay for but don’t use!!!

  14. Avatar photo That Doggy in the Window says:

With Netflix increasing the cost of its ad supported subs, expect the rest to follow.

These cost increases will also fuel the further rise of Fire TV sticks and side loading, they had seemingly cracked the problem of piracy a decade a go but as always greed gets in the way.

Other streaming services like Spotify will experience similar, especially when it comes to the fact you don’t own a copy of the music (or content).

Due to all of this I’ve went back to using a cheap MP3 player and downloading all my old music from backup……c’est la vie

    1. Avatar photo greggles says:

I checked out spotify and in my opinion thats already too expensive. I was easily put off. There is as you say only one outcome from all this, a dwindling userbase alongside an increase of piracy. Piracy is much more accessible than it was in the older days as well.
