It’s been a year since BT and the Northumberland County Council signed a £4.1m deal (phase 2 extension contract) to further expand the reach of their “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) FTTC/P network to 95% of local premises by the end of 2017. Today we’ve learnt which areas will be the first to benefit.

The already complicated situation in North Swindon (Wiltshire, England) just became even more interesting after Virgin Media appeared to indicate that its ultrafast (up to 300Mbps) cable and fibre optic broadband network would also be expanding into additional parts of the area.

The South Somerset District Council (SSDC) has stalled plans to put £640,000 into the central Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme because of uncertainty over how the clawback reinvestment from BT and plans for a 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation might impact the roll-out.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK scheme has today established a new EU State Aid umbrella agreement, which will encourage smaller altnet ISPs to take part and allow new contracts to be signed as part of efforts to expand superfast broadband (30Mbps+) towards and beyond the 95% coverage goal.

The Hayton Parish Council in Cumbria has criticised local wireless ISP Solway Communications after the provider allegedly failed to honour a pledge to withdraw its claim on a number of postcodes in the Parish, which has prevented Openreach (BT) from building a new “fibre broadband” (FTTC) cabinet in the area.

The Isle of Wight Council, which represents an island just off England’s central south coast (home to around 140,000 people), confirms that its joint £5.1m contract with BT has successfully expanded the reach of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 99% of local homes and businesses.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK project has proposed a revised Code of Conduct for tackling ‘Use of Existing Infrastructure‘, which clarifies that any ISP who bids for a contract must provide information for all their relevant infrastructure (irrespective of whether it’s actually used) in the target area.

Is it Europe’s fault that some urban areas in the United Kingdom still have to suffer poor broadband? At least one newspaper appears to think so and is blaming the issue entirely on restrictive EU state aid rules, albeit while completely ignoring the natural responsibility of private sector operators.
