The telecoms regulator has today set out “detailed pricing proposals” for Openreach’s (BT) new Duct and Pole Access product, which allows their existing telegraph poles and underground cable ducts to be used by rivals in order to deploy new ultrafast broadband services (e.g. FTTP/H).

The Superfast Dorset programme in central southern England has launched a new ‘Community Broadband Fund’, which offers a maximum of £1,500 per eligible premise to help properties in poorly served areas get access to a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) connection.

After a lot of negotiation the Government and BT have today proposed a deal that could see the operator fund a new Universal Service Obligation (USO), which will aim to ensure that everybody can request a broadband download speed of at least 10Mbps by 2020. Now for the caveats.

Grant Shapps’s (MP) cross-party British Infrastructure Group, which is supported by 57 MPs, has published its latest Broadbad 2.0 report, which among other things calls for consumers in the United Kingdom to be compensated for sub-10Mbps broadband speeds. Sadly it also makes some mistakes.

After a chaotic start to the year BT has today published their latest report for Q2 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base reach a total of 9,286,000 subscribers (up by 19K vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.1 million “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) users (up 170K vs 211K in Q1).

Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Market Review (here), which last year pledged to open up access to Openreach’s (BT) national Dark Fibre network, cut leased line (Ethernet) prices and deliver quicker installs, has been sent back to the drawing board by the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT).

Rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear and national operator Openreach (BT) have won the Phase 3 roll-out contracts for Berkshire in England, which will see a mix of 1Gbps FTTP and up to 80Mbps FTTC broadband being used to reach an additional 13,500 homes and businesses by the end of 2019.

Property developer firm the Berkeley Group, which has a partnership to roll-out Openreach’s (BT) 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) technology at new build sites, has said that “ultrafast broadband” is now “almost as important to new home buyers as running water and electricity.”

The Better Broadband for Suffolk project in England has celebrated after their joint contract with Openreach (BT) managed to push the local coverage of FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 90% of homes and businesses, with 98% being the next target for 2020.

The Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) in England has published an update on their development of a third contract, which would use £1.23 million of public investment to push “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) availability beyond the current target and towards universal coverage.

The South Gloucestershire Council in England, which is already working with Openreach (BT) to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage to 97% of the region by December 2017, has signed a new £3m contract that will benefit a further 4,300 premises (3,800 via FTTP).

The Leicestershire County Council appears to have moved forward with Phase 3 of their on-going Superfast Leicestershire project, which will commit up to £5.633m to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage to the final 3% of local premises (i.e. as many as they can reach).

The BT Wholesale Broadband Checker has recently added two additional rows to its output for the customer premise environment (‘VRI‘ and ‘NTEFaceplate‘) and so far as we can tell these only show when testing with a specific telephone number (i.e. not specific address or postcode checks).

A further 2,300 homes and businesses in North Lincolnshire (England) are set to get access to “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds via Openreach’s (BT) network due to a reinvestment of £2.9m in public funding from earlier phases of the Northern Lincs Broadband project.
