Telecoms operator Vodafone has told ISPreview.co.uk that they have “no firm plans to launch” ultrafast broadband products based off Openreach’s (BT) new 330Mbps capable G.fast technology. Instead they intend to focus on preparing their new 1Gbps FTTH service for launch “later this year“.

Openreach (BT) is at risk of missing two of the key Minimum Service Level (MSL) targets for their high bandwidth Ethernet product family (e.g. Ethernet Access Direct), which were agreed with the UK network operator as part of Ofcom’s 2016 Business Connectivity Market Review (BCMR).

The most recent independent data for Q4 reveals that the United Kingdom ended 2017 with fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks having covered 94.7% of premises (94.3% if you define superfast as 30Mbps+), which suggests that the Government has hit their 95% target.

Residents of Cwmfelin, a village on the southern outskirts of Maesteg (Wales, UK), have been left without access to Openreach’s FTTC (VDSL) based “fibre broadband” network for almost a week after a car clipped the curb and ploughed into the operator’s cabinet before ending up on its roof.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England has awarded its £20.5 million Phase 3 contract to Openreach (BT), which will see their FTTP and FTTC based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network being extended to reach an additional 14,239 homes and businesses (95% of premises).

The Connecting Shropshire project has confirmed that fixed wireless broadband ISP Airband have deployed their first live transmitter site in the UK county, which forms part of a £11.2 million contract that will extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) to 14,000+ extra local premises by 2020.

After a final consultation (here) the Government has today revealed its chosen path for implementing a new legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which promises a minimum broadband download speed of 10Mbps (1Mbps upload) for all by 2020 and rejects BT’s £600m voluntary proposal.

Market regulator Ofcom has today published its International Communications Market Report 2017, which compares broadband and other telecoms services in the United Kingdom against 16 other countries. The UK fairs well for 30Mbps+ broadband coverage but our “full fibre” (FTTP/H) needs work.

The Scottish Government has today confirmed that it plans to spend £600 million on gap funding for their R100 programme, which aims to make a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) capable network available to 100% of Scotland by the end of 2021 (March 2022 when viewing as a financial year).

Openreach has paused a trial of Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP) technology for their troublesome ECI based FTTC “fibre broadband” street cabinets. The technology works fine on their Huawei estate but ECI has long been the naughty child, although their trial is expected to continue next year.

The Community Fibre Partnerships scheme that Openreach (BT) runs, which offers grants up to £30,000 to help co-fund the cost of upgrading an area to receive their FTTC or FTTP based “fibre broadband” network, expects to have benefited 60,000 UK premises within 12 months (currently 30,000).
