As expected the UK government has used today’s Queens Speech (State Opening of Parliament) to outline the revival of a £2bn plan to expand the reach of existing ISP based internet snooping laws (data retention) to log a much bigger slice of your online activity (e.g. Skype and Facebook access); regardless of whether or not you ever committed a crime.

Smoothwall, the UK’s largest supplier of school based website filtering (blocking) solutions, has warned the government not to force broadband ISPs into imposing default internet censorship of adult websites upon their customers. The firm claims that such systems are a “very blunt instrument” and don’t stop young people who “actively seek” such content.

Media law group Wiggin has released its latest annual 2012 Digital Entertainment Survey, which conducted an online survey of 2,500 UK respondents (“representative of the national demographic“) and discovered how 53% agreed that the internet “requires more regulation” to prevent broadband ISP customers from “downloading unauthorised content“. But only a minority were found to engage in internet piracy.

The UK governments Prime Minister (PM), David Cameron, looks set to put his support behind the controversial Parliamentary Inquiry into Online Child Protection by forcing broadband ISPs to offer automatic blocks on pornographic internet sites (adult content).

A new study conducted by Sweden’s Lund University (Cybernorms.net) has revealed that 40% more 15 to 25-year-olds are now “hiding their activities online” than in 2009, such as by using services like Virtual Private Networking (VPN), and often as a means to avoid the increasing crackdown against internet piracy and unlawful file sharing.

The Conservative MP for Wiltshire, Claire Perry, has today published the results of her Parliamentary Inquiry into Online Child Protection and recommended that the UK government begin a formal consultation on the introduction of an Opt-In content filtering system for “all internet accounts” in the country.

The Shadow Deputy Prime Minister, Harriet Harman MP (Labour Party), has demanded that the UK government establish a “clear timetable” for implementation of its highly controversial Digital Economy Act (DEA), which aims to reduce internet copyright infringement (piracy) by imposing a series of costly new measures upon broadband ISPs and their customers (e.g. warning letters, service restrictions, disconnection etc.).
