UK ISP BT and partner Toshiba have today announced that they intend to build the “world’s first” quantum-secured metro fibre optic network between commercial sites in London, which will adopt ultra-secure communications via the use of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) encryption.

Openreach (BT) has today set out the wholesale prices that alternative network (AltNet) builders will have to pay when using the operator’s Ethernet (e.g. EAD) products to feed their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services to end-users, which caused some annoyance within the market.

Business and residential UK ISP Glide Group, which has built a national UK “full fibre” broadband network that reaches over 100,000 premises, has announced that their network is being extended to reach businesses in Corby (Northamptonshire), including on the large Corby Gate Business Park (i.e. an upgrade to their previous copper network).

A new UK network operator with the imaginative title of Digital Infrastructure (DI) has today announced that they’ve partnered with Aberla Utilities as part of a 5-year contract to deliver Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband across around 38,000 homes in the Cheshire town of Crewe. But they’ll face more than a little competition.

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which currently works alongside Virgin Media Business (VMO2) to supply ultrafast broadband to c.3,000 schools in London (over 1.2 million children), reports that one of VMO2’s fibre optic cables has been “seriously damaged” and is disrupting connectivity to various schools and businesses.

At the start of this year ITS Technology, supported by the North Lincolnshire Council (NLC), began building a new 10Gbps capable “full fibre” Ethernet and broadband network to serve local businesses in the industrial town of Scunthorpe (Lincolnshire). The good news today is that this network has now gone live.

Last year Neos Networks scooped the £10.5m Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) contract to deploy a new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre network to connect 190 public sector sites (hospitals, council buildings etc.) in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. A total of 93 sites have now been completed, supported by 153km of new underground fibre cable.

Manchester-based UK ISP Telcom (ClearFibre, WeFibre etc.), which is busy deploying a gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network across the North West of England and Midlands, has managed to secure a significant investment of £63m from Gresham House, a specialist alternative asset manager.
