As expected BT are now starting their third 6 month trial of G.fast broadband technology (ITU G.9701), this time in Swansea (Wales), which will initially offer Internet download speeds of up to 330Mbps (50Mbps upload) before rising to 500Mbps over the next decade.

Israel-based Sckipio has made several announcements at the start of this week’s Broadband World Forum event, not least with their ability to squeeze a broadband speed of 2000Mbps out of the new G.fast (ITU G.9701) technology that BT are also preparing to roll-out. But there’s a catch.

As expected BT has today confirmed that their second major trial of future G.fast broadband technology (ITU G.9701), which will initially offer speeds of up to 330Mbps (50Mbps upload) before rising to 500Mbps over the next decade, has begun in Gosforth (Newcastle, North England).

At the end of last month BTOpenreach began connecting customers to their large-scale 6-9 month trial of 500Mbps capable NGA2 G.fast broadband technology and 1Gbps Fibre-on-Demand (FOD2) in the market town of Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire). Now we have the first official progress update.

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) in Taiwan has this week officially begun the world’s first commercial deployment of next generation G.fast broadband technology, which is the same service that BT are currently trialling (here) for launch in the UK during 2016/17.

BTOpenreach has told ISPreview.co.uk that the first large-scale residential trial of their future G.fast broadband technology (details), which the telecoms operator expects to sell via the Next Generation Access 2 (NGA2) tag, will begin next month in Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire) and ISPs are now being invited.

The CTO of BT’s Wholesale division, Colin Bannon, has revealed that their future G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology has also been tested on longer copper lines of 350 metres and the operator found that at this distance it was still able to deliver Internet speeds of 300Mbps.

Israel-based semiconductor company Sckipio has suggested that BT’s future deployment of G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband (here), which from 2016/17 aims to make speeds of 500Mbps available to “most homes“, could be fuelled in urban areas by millimeter Wave (mmW) wireless technology connected to distribution points (i.e. instead of fibre optic cable).

The national telecoms operator, BT, has today delivered an earlier than expected surprise by announcing their intention to deploy the next generation hybrid-fibre G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology across the United Kingdom from 2016/17, with “most homes” told to expect speeds of ‘up to’ 500Mbps (Megabits per second) and there’s also a “premium” option for up to 1000Mbps (the premium may come via FTTP).

BT has today confused fibre optic connection terminologies a little by detailing their first pilot for a “new form” of Fibre-to-the-Basement / Building (FTTB) broadband technology in the City of London area, which uses VDSL2 over copper like FTTC but is optimised for basements / comms rooms where the operator has a wayleave/permission from the landlord and access to power.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) has now given its final approval to the next generation G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband standard, which in a few short years could replace BTOpenreach’s ‘up to’ 80Mbps FTTC service and potentially deliver up to around ten times the speed using similar hybrid fibre lines (mixed fibre optic and shorter copper).

Israel-based Sckipio appears to have become one of the world’s first manufacturers to produce hardware that is fully compliant with the ITU-T’s G.fast recommendation (G.9700/1), a technology that BT recently demonstrated as having the capability to deliver broadband speeds of up to almost 1000Mbps via existing copper telephone lines.
