Fibre provider Grain Connect, supported by wireless ISP Solway Communications, confirms that it has successfully raised £10m in additional equity finance from Albion Capital (Albion Real Assets Fund). The money will support the further development of its UK “full fibre” broadband network at new build home developments.

The UK Government has this week formally adopted a Statement of Strategic Priorities (SSP) for UK mobile and broadband services, which broadly requires Ofcom to improve protection for consumers in the wider telecoms market, promote investment in “gigabit-capable” broadband and support new entrants to the market.

BT Group’s latest results to the end of September 2019 (Q2 19/20 financial) confirm that Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network has increased its coverage to total 4.2 million premises (up from 3.7m last quarter), which includes 1.81m on FTTP (up from 1.51m) and 2.42m on hybrid fibre G.fast (up from 2.16m).

UK ISP Grain Connect has announced a new agreement with the Birmingham City Council (West Midlands), which will see them rollout a “hyperfast” gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the future Perry Barr Residential Scheme (i.e. a development of 1,400 new build homes and apartments).

KCOM’s £85m rollout of a new FTTP broadband ISP network in Hull, as well as Digital Scotland‘s £442m (public and private investment) work with Openreach (BT) to spread “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 940,000 extra Scottish premises, have today both been named as UK finalists for the 2019 European Broadband Awards.

The Government’s (DCMS) Building Digital UK team recently proposed an interesting build scenario for the future £5bn – state aid funded – project to roll-out gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, which as predicted suggests that the build phase probably won’t begin until late 2021.

A new batch of independent data has estimated that Cityfibre’s £2.5bn effort to rollout a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to cover 5 million UK premises across 37 cities and towns by the end of 2025 (here) – supported by Vodafone – has just passed the 100,000 premises milestone.

The City of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire UK has announced a new project worth £19.2m with Swedish operator VXFIBER (including subsidiary LilaConnect), which aims to create a publicly-owned and operated, open-access and gigabit-capable, 60 mile long full fibre broadband network with “citywide” coverage by spring 2021.

The Mayor of London UK, Sadiq Khan, has today announced a new £10m project that aims to boost “full fibre” broadband coverage in the city by running optical fibre cables using the Tube network and public buildings. The work is considered to be the “first step” in their effort to “support faster connectivity for 400,000 homes.”

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has started to inform their existing customers that the standard price of their fixed line home broadband packages will be increasing from December 2019, with the underlying monthly cost being set to rise by £2.50 extra per month.

UK ISP County Broadband, which last year raised £46 million from Aviva to help it rollout a new Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the rural East of England region, has today confirmed that their build plan will cover 50 rural villages by Q2 2020 (reaching 15,000 total homes passed).

Axione UK, which is a subsidiary of French communications provider Axione S.A.S, has revealed that they’re planning to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based Gigabit-capable broadband network in the United Kingdom, which would be made available for other ISPs to harness via wholesale. All eyes on Scotland.

The Welsh Government has quietly published an evaluation report into their Superfast Cymru project with BT (Openreach), which put around £225m of public funding toward an extended roll-out of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) in order to help cover poorly served parts of the country. Overall it’s a positive outcome.

Wins were scooped by Fastershire, Hyperoptic, Stirling Council and others.

Portsmouth-based ISP toob, which is being supported by an investment of £75m (here) and aims to cover 100,000 UK premises with their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network by the end of 2021, has reached a deal to use ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 (TA5000) series of Multi-Service Access Nodes (MSAN).

Full fibre and broadband ISP network builder Cityfibre has decided that the debate over moving from old copper lines to new “full fibre” (FTTP) ones shouldn’t just be focused upon Openreach (BT). As a result the operator has proposed to conduct an industry-wide consultation to examine how alternative network providers can help.
