The CEO of alternative network ISP Gigaclear, Matthew Hare, has today announced that he is stepping down after 8 years of building Gigabit capable fibre optic (FTTP) broadband networks to rural parts of the UK. The company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mike Surrey, will become its interim CEO.

The UK Minister of State for Digital, Margot James MP, yesterday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a Gigabit “full fibre” (FTTP) future and also called on ISPs to “pass on [the] benefit” from Ofcom’s recent wholesale market reviews in order to improve the take-up of “superfast broadband.”

Some residents in the rural Gloucestershire UK village of Chalford have vented anger at Gigaclear after the ISP’s roll-out of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network allegedly damaged properties, caused “intolerable vibration” in some homes and a worker had their legs struck by a digger.

The Mayor of London UK, Sadiq Khan, has published a new roadmap that aims to build the “smartest city in the world” and to improve its digital connectivity. The UK High Court has today granted Cityfibre permission to proceed with its Judicial Review of the Advertising Standards Authority’s decision regarding the use of “fibre” terminology in broadband ISP advertising, which the operator has often accused of being “misleading” for consumers.

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media has taken the unusual decision to sue Durham County Council (England) in the hope that doing so will enable them to lay new fibre optic cable along grass verges and without having to pay “hefty” fees per metre. The case will test the recently revised Electronic Communications Code (ECC).

As promised the Aylesbury Vale District Council in Buckinghamshire, specifically their Audit Committee, has published the draft outcome of their inquiry into the controversial Aylesbury Vale Broadband (AVB) network that was sold to UK ISP Gigaclear after running into challenges with their rural FTTH rollout.

Network builder Cityfibre and UK ISP MLL Telecom have opened up their new 24km long Gigabit fibre optic broadband and Ethernet infrastructure to local businesses in the city of Stirling (Scotland). The network has been live since last year (here) but initially it was only open to public sector sites (Public Service Network).

Rural fibre optic UK ISP Gigaclear has announced that they’ve invested a further £6.2 million (£8m total so far) to expand their existing Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) broadband network to reach more than 4,500 additional homes and businesses in West Kent (England) by the end of 2020.
