Bradford-based UK ISP Exa Networks has been chosen by Cityfibre to supply businesses and education sites over their new Gigabit capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network in West Sussex, which is being built with support from the Government’s £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund.

Telecoms giant Vodafone has today published their latest quarterly results to the end of June 2018 (Q1 FY19), which saw them add +52,000 new broadband and phone customers (down from +65,000 in the previous quarter) to total 435,000. Meanwhile their mobile base shrank to 17,432,000 (quarterly fall of -83,000).

Cityfibre has named the first streets in Aberdeen (Scotland) to benefit from their £40m (private investment) deployment of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network with UK ISP Vodafone, which has just this week officially entered the construction phase.

The national telecoms regulator has today followed yesterday’s Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (here) by setting out the core regulatory changes that they intend to pursue, which will support the government’s new plan and aim to spread Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks to all by 2033.

The UK government has today set out a range of new proposals (copper switch-off, regulatory reforms etc.) as part of their Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (FTIR), which seeks to help boost investment and support for future 5G mobile and “full fibre” (FTTH/P) ultrafast broadband. But there are caveats.

Fibre optic UK network builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve joined Deutsche Glasfaser, Open Fiber, Reykjavikur and SIRO as signatories of a new alliance, which aims to promote a wholesale-only build model and end the misuse of “fibre” terminology in consumer broadband ISP advertising.

Openreach is in Cardiff today to talk-up the progress of their “Fibre First” project, which among other things confirmed that over the past few months they’ve added 100K premises to their UK coverage of “full fibre” FTTP broadband (total of 600,000+ premises passed).

Some 50 family homes in Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) have been selected as the first to trial Vodafone’s new Gigafast Broadband product, which is based off the 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network that is currently being deployed by Cityfibre to cover 1 million UK homes in up to 12 of their existing cities by 2021.

Cityfibre has claimed that the UK Government’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond MP, will announce a date for switching off the legacy copper telecoms network in order to encourage investment in Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband ISP networks.

UK ISP TalkTalk has published a short trading update for the three months to 30th June 2018 (Q1 FY19), which finally gives us a solid figure for their broadband subscriber base of 4,219,000 and that’s because it grew by +80,000 net adds in the quarter (Q1 FY18: +20k, Q4 FY18: +109k). There’s also a small update on FTTH in York.

Alternative network ISP County Broadband has followed last year’s pilot roll-out of a new 1000Mbps (Gigabit) capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) service in the rural Cambridgeshire village of Broughton (here) by securing an investment of £46m with Aviva Investors. Big plans for “full fibre” expansion ahoy!

A Censuswide survey of 3,422 home broadband ISP users has found support for Cityfibre’s legal challenge of the current UK advertising rules, which they say “misleadingly” allows so-called hybrid fibre ISPs to promote their services as being “fibre optic” despite using slower metallic cables (e.g. copper).

The Centre for Cities think tank, which is supported by O2, has published a new report that recommends what cities across the United Kingdom need to do in order to facilitate the rollout of next generation “full fibre” (FTTP/H) ultrafast broadband ISP technologies and future 5G Mobile networks.

The joint £30m plan by Cityfibre and UK ISP Vodafone to deploy a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across the city of Peterborough (Cambridgeshire) has finally entered the build stage this week, with the first civil engineering work getting underway around Dogsthorpe.

The stated-owned telecoms operator JT Group (Jersey Telecom) has quietly confirmed that after 6 years they’ve finally completed the build of a new 1Gbps capable “ultrafast” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband ISP network on the English Channel Island of Jersey. Any old copper lines will soon be gone too.

Openreach (BT) has today unsurprisingly announced that Huawei and Nokia have been awarded key contracts to deliver the new electronics (headend) that will support their on-going “Fibre First” project, which aims to roll-out 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to 3 million UK premises by the end of 2020.

The Government’s National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has today published the United Kingdom’s first-ever National Infrastructure Assessment, which among other things calls for nationwide coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband by 2033 and for a related ‘National Broadband Plan‘ to be devised by Spring 2019.
