The outgoing CEO of Vodafone Group, Vittorio Colao, has told an investors meeting, which was discussing their plans for next generation broadband ISP and mobile infrastructure, that they’re still talking with BT (Openreach) about the possibility of an agreement on fibre services but they’re not yet in the “right place.”

The latest Q1 2018 (calendar) results from Vodafone UK reveal that their fixed line broadband base grew by +65,000 in the quarter to total 382,000 (up from +39K added in Q4 2017) and their 4G  mobile can now cover 99% of the UK population. Meanwhile the operator’s group CEO, Vittorio Colao, is to be replaced.

The rumour mill has burst into full swing this morning with reports that UK ISPs Virgin Media and TalkTalk are tentatively exploring the possibility of passive infrastructure sharing, which could enable the budget provider to lay their fibre optic lines in Virgin’s cable ducts and vice versa.

Belfast-based ISP B4B Networks, which until now has largely focused upon serving business premises in Northern Ireland, has hinted that they could soon build their own “full fibre” FTTP/H style “ultrafast” broadband network to homes and businesses in certain parts of the UK.

BT has released their Q1 2018 (calendar) results, which sees them increase FTTP and Mobile infrastructure investment via an annual capex allocation of around £3.7bn (excluding BDUK) and report that 1.56 million UK premises are now covered by their G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+).

Smaller alternative network ISPs like Ecom are facing a new barrier to expanding the rural reach of ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) based broadband networks in Buckinghamshire (England), which follows the council’s expansion of rules that make it harder to get a Streetworks license.

Barclays has cut its rating on BT from “overweight” to “equal weight” and reduced their price target on shares by 20% to 280p. The broker reasons that BT’s network access division (Openreach) is coming under pressure in the UK wholesale market from rival “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband ISPs.

Manx Telecom‘s roll-out of a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP network on the Isle of Man is making progress. The operator now expects to reach 13% of local premises (4,600 homes and businesses) by the end of 2018.

Rural ISP Gigaclear has achieved an important milestone in their contract to deploy a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTP/H) broadband network to 53,000 premises in Devon and Somerset. The operator has managed to run their cable underneath the iconic 19th century Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Alternative network UK ISP Wessex Internet, which has deployed a mix of “full fibre” (FTTH) and fixed wireless broadband services to parts of rural Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset and Hampshire in England, has been “investing heavily” in network upgrades and can now offer “unlimited” usage.

The telecoms regulator has today published an update to last year’s annual Connected Nations report, which uses more recent data from 2018 to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. For example, “full fibre” (FTTH/P) now reaches 4% (1.2 million premises).

The boss of UK telecoms regulator Ofcom, Sharon White, has told a conference in London today that BT (Openreach) must replace their “Victorian-era” copper ISP network with a modern “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband alternative or “risk losing swathes of customers to [rivals].”

A team of Dutch scientists from the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) have borrowed a technology from existing copper based ADSL and VDSL (FTTC) networks in order to boost speeds over pure fibre optic (FTTH/P) lines, such as by implementing adaptive modulation techniques.

The UK cities of Edinburgh, Coventry, Huddersfield and Stirling have today been named as the next to be covered via Cityfibre and Vodafone’s joint deployment of a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband ISP network by the end of 2021.

Fibre optic (FTTP/H) network builder Cityfibre has announced that they’ve agreed the terms of a recommended £537.8m cash acquisition by Connect Infrastructure Bidco Limited (Bidco), which is a newly-incorporated company that is jointly-owned by a consortium of two key infrastructure investors.
