When is a “fibre optic” broadband service not fibre optic? The answer might seem obvious but if so then it’s not something that the industry appears keen to respect. But just what does the term fibre optic actually mean and why are ISPs so eager to use and in some cases abuse it.

Gigaclear has announced plans to upgrade its Rutland Telecom managed network in the rural market town of Uppingham (Leicestershire) with a new 1Gpbs (Gigabits per second) capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) service, which will be priced from £37 per month.

UK ISP Gigaclear has today confirmed that the two Oxfordshire villages of Fyfield and Tubney (England) can expect to receive ultra-fast broadband speeds of up to 1Gpbs (Gigabits per second) via a new fibre optic (FTTP) network from early 2013.

The UK government’s Chancellor, George Osborne MP, has today announced his Autumn Statement and revealed the final list of 12 “smaller cities” that will benefit from around £50m (Urban Broadband Fund) to help expand the coverage of “ultra-fast” broadband (80-100Mbps+) and “high speed” public wifi services into neglected areas.

CityFibre, which builds fibre optic infrastructure for cities in the United Kingdom, has announced that its “open access” and city-wide Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) style ultrafast broadband network in York will be extended to serve local businesses from early next year (Q1-2013). KC, the incumbent internet and phone provider for Hull and East Yorkshire (England), has successfully completed the initial roll-out of their “super-fast” 350Mbps capable and fibre optic based Lightstream broadband service to pass 15,000 local premises. It now plans to reach an extra 30,000 homes and businesses by March 2015.

The European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) has supported calls for a “radical” boost to Europe’s Digital Agenda strategy, which could see “ultrafast” broadband ISP speeds of 100Mbps (Megabits per second) being made available to 100% of UK and EU households by 2020; with 50% able to get speeds of 1000Mbps (1Gbps).
