The UK governments Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has today given its first of two pre-contract agreements for £157,500 to help 525 homes and businesses in Garsdale and Dentdale (Cumbria) gain access to a superfast “fibre optic” broadband service through its £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF).

The Local Government Association (LGA), which claims to be the national voice of councils across the United Kingdom, has warned that last week’s newly proposed measures to boost the roll-out of superfast broadband services by relaxing planning rules will result in a “significant erosion of people’s ability to influence their local environment“.

The UK government’s new Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt Maria Miller MP, has announced plans to “fast-track” the roll-out of superfast broadband (25Mbps+) services around the country by resolving “unnecessary bureaucracy” in the current planning system. However the proposals are nothing new.

JT Global (Jersey Telecom) claims to have exceeded expectations after it connected the first 1,000 homes to its new ultra-fast 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network on Jersey (Channel Islands), with around 3% choosing to take their 100Mbps (Megabits per second) service.

JT Global (formerly Jersey Telecom) has signed a new deal with Swedish open access network specialist Netadmin Systems to help it manage the operation and roll-out of their ultra-fast fibre optic broadband (FTTH) service to 42,000 premises on Jersey (Channel Islands) within the next 3 years.

Telecoms regulator Ofcom UK has today proposed to grant Fibrewave Networks the power to “carry out street works” as part of its plan to roll-out a new rural fibre optic based superfast broadband ISP network in Cambridgeshire, which will initially cover the villages of Earith, Bluntisham and Colne.

CityFibre Holdings, which builds UK fibre optic broadband infrastructure (FTTP) for business, public sector and domestic needs, has criticised BT for choosing to “soft-pedal” on the roll-out of true Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband services because of an “overwhelming bias” towards slower FTTC technology.

BT has told the Lords Select Committee Inquiry into the UK governments superfast broadband strategy that its new fibre optic based network (FTTC , FTTP) will need more freedom from Ofcom’s changing regulation and price controls if it is to make a bigger “long-term investment” in related services.

The European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA), which represents alternative / smaller broadband ISPs, has demanded that the European Commission (EC) “take urgent action” to prevent dominant national telecoms operators (e.g. BT) from using “discriminatory conduct” against them and thus damaging their ability to compete in the new market for superfast broadband (FTTx etc.) services.
