David Henriques, a Senior Associate Economist at Ofcom and Visiting Fellow at the LSE, has appeared to suggest that menu regulation for fibre optic broadband networks may be a better approach for the United Kingdom to take than incentive orientated regulation.

The Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) council in South West Wales has revealed the outline of a new plan that aims to help spread the availability of ultrafast “full fibre” broadband connectivity across rural parts of the county, which among other things includes a £2m investment to boost existing voucher schemes and a LFFN bid.

The piecemeal announcements continue today as UK ISP Virgin Media confirms that they’ve completed an extension of their 500Mbps+ capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and TV network to 3,700 premises (homes and businesses) in the Tameside town of Hyde, Greater Manchester.

Rural fixed wireless broadband ISP Voneus, which currently only covers around 4,500 UK premises with their 30-50Mbps capable network, has managed to secure a large investment from Macquarie Capital that could help their network to target 900,000 homes. Going forward they also intend to rollout full fibre (FTTP) services.

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has revealed how Openreach anticipates that reaching the final 10% of UK premises with 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology is likely to require an “outlay of around £4,000 each to pass” (vs build costs of £300-£400 for the first 50% of premises).

A further 3,700 homes and businesses in rural parts of Essex (England) look set to gain access to a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” ISP network after Openreach (BT) and the Essex County Council (ECC) signed three new contracts, which are supported by public funding of £5m.

BT Group has today published their latest results to the end of June 2019 (Q1 19/20 financial), which reveals that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP networks have grown their coverage to 1.51 million and 2.16 million UK premises respectively (overall total of 3.7m, up from 3.2m last quarter).

The Managing Director of UK ISP Exascale, Thomas Bibb, has today informed ISPreview.co.uk that the provider has begun to build their own Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband network in Telford (Shropshire), which will initially (Phase One) aim to cover 1,200 homes and 250 businesses within as little as 6 weeks.

The £22m+ state aid fuelled Connecting Cheshire project has finally completed Phase 2 of their contract with Openreach (BT) to rollout a “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) network – FTTC (VDSL2) and a little FTTP – to cover 95% of local premises (100,000 additional premises), albeit 7 months later than planned.

Business broadband and communications provider Telcom has today unveiled its new partner business, Telcom Wholesale, which claims to be diversifying the wholesale carrier market by “offering an extensive route to up-stream carriers infrastructure” (inc. “boutique fibre network providers” such as The Loop and CityFibre).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today announced that their multi-billion pound “Fibre First” rollout of Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology will – over the next 12 months – be reaching parts of an additional 36 new locations across the UK (total now 74).

Customers of BT’s (EE) retail fixed line broadband ISP business (around 9.4 million of them) hit a new record level of internet data traffic after the network peaked at around 13Tbps (Terabits per second) in March, which is up from 10.4Tbps at roughly the same time last year. By comparison their mobile broadband network hit 0.4Tbps.

Full fibre network builder Cityfibre has today announced that their £30m plan to rollout a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to “nearly every home and business” in the town of Southend-on-Sea (Essex) – supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone – has finally begun the construction phase.

The incumbent broadband ISP for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they will launch two new routers from mid-September 2019 – the Technicolor DGA2231 and ZyXEL XMG3927-B. Both look to be very capable devices and are aimed at users of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

The CEO of UK cable and TV operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global), Lutz Schüler, was warned a tiny rival start-up ISP called toob that it “will use everything to keep them out of our city,” which is a reference to how both plan to deploy 1Gbps speed broadband services across the port city of Southampton in Hampshire.

The UK Government’s new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has announced a £3.6bn Towns Fund to support an initial 100 towns “so that they will get the improved transport and improved broadband connectivity that they need,” although yesterday’s speech to the Manchester Science and Industry Museum didn’t include any detail.
