UK ISP BitStreme (BitBahn.io) has today announced that they’ve launched their new 1Gbps capable hybrid fibre optic and Microwave wireless broadband network to cover three locations around Bedfordshire, which will very soon be followed by additional areas in Essex and Kent.

Cityfibre’s £35m investment to upgrade and extend their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the south coast UK city of Bournemouth (Dorset), which is being supported by ISP partner Vodafone UK, appears to be moving up a gear this month with work starting in areas north of Wallisdown Road.

Rural focused UK ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) has successfully hit their £3 million crowdfunding target via Triodos Bank (here), which will help to support the on-going rollout of a community built and funded 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across remote parts of several counties.

The Community Fibre Partnerships scheme from Openreach (BT), which offers to help co-fund the cost of upgrading digitally isolated communities to receive their FTTC, G.fast or FTTP based superfast broadband ISP network, has now signed-up its 930th community and expects to deliver for 100,000 UK premises.

The Government’s Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, Margot James MP, has wrongfully claimed that its Building Digital UK programme has now helped to push fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network coverage to 97% of UK premises (the expectation is that this could reach around 98% by the end of 2020).

Cityfibre has announced that their £60m rollout of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the West Midlands city of Coventry, which is supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone, has moved into several new areas of the city (Bablake, Radford and Henley) and added a new contractor.

The Building Digital UK scheme, which since 2013 has helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 5,123,530 extra premises (up by +46.9K since Q4 2018), has just published its latest take-up data to the end of March 2019. Coverage continues to grow, albeit slowly as contracts near their end.

In a surprise twist The Takeover Panel has ordered that the proposed sale of the incumbent telecoms and broadband operator for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, should go to auction after neither of the two bidders were able to declare their offers for the company as “final“. The stage is now set for a c.£600m sale.

Once again contractors working for Cityfibre, which is investing £30m to deploy a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in the city of Peterborough, have attracted local complaints. A lack of prior notification, blocked driveways / roads, rubble left on lawns and issues of work quality seem to top the gripes.

Alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP Trooli (CallFlow), which last month secured nearly £27m (€30m) from European investors (here) and aims to cover 500,000 premises across the South East of England by the end of 2024, has signed a £3.5m deal with marketing firm Cheeky to help promote their new network.

The £442m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland (DSSB) project with BT (Openreach) is continuing to expand and in the final stages we’re seeing a lot more Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) reaching rural parts, most recently around Lanarkshire and Aberdeenshire.

New UK ISP Box Broadband has confirmed that the large rural village of Cranleigh in Surrey will be the next one to be reached by their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which has already started connecting homes and businesses in nearby Ewhurst, Walliswood and Ellen’s Green.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve begun building their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the city of Leeds (at a cost of £120 million), which is being supported by residential ISP partner Vodafone UK (Gigafast). But local competition is rife.

In a surprising development Cityfibre’s Smart City trial with Cross Keys Homes (CKH) has been accused by Big Brother Watch of turning Peterborough’s social housing estates into “surveillance zones,” which apparently stems from a deployment of sensors that connect to their full fibre broadband network.

Oxford-based UK ISP Zzoomm, which aspires to cover 1 million UK homes with a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network by the end of 2024 (here), has confirmed that some 6,800 premises in the town of Henley-on-Thames (Oxfordshire) will be the first to benefit from their rollout.

A new trial has enabled cable operator Virgin Media UK to deploy a 1Gbps (150Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / RFoG) broadband network into the Berkshire village of Greenham near Newbury, which was made possible by feeding the network via a 10Gbps high-capacity millimetre wave (mmW) radio link.
