The Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) has today signed a new £16.26 million contract with BT that will provide “world class fibre broadband speeds” to 53,000 local homes and businesses. Sadly the final time-scales, speeds and targets seem to be unclear.

The Kent County Council (KCC) in England has this morning awarded a £39.47 million contract, which will ensure that 91% of local homes and businesses gain access to superfast broadband ISP speeds of 25Mbps+ by the end of 2015, to BT.

A new study from telecoms analyst Point Topic UK has suggested that there is a ceiling to the broadband speeds that residential consumers are prepared to pay for, with hybrid-fibre (e.g. FTTC, FTTN) solutions tending to dominate the “superfast” market and demand for “bandwidths of a gigabit” being “relatively low“.

BT and the Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) have today announced details of how they intend to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) available to “at least” 88% of all homes and businesses in the English East Midlands county by April 2016 (everybody else will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).

BT has officially signed the £45 million Connecting Cambridgeshire contract, which aims to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services available to 90% of homes and businesses across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (England, UK) by the end of 2015 (i.e. 98% will get FTTC but the 8% difference will be sub-25Mbps).

BTOpenreach, which takes care of BT’s national telecoms network in the United Kingdom, has today announced the recruitment of a further 1,000 new engineers to help with the on-going roll-out of superfast broadband (FTTC, FTTP) and phone services into customers’ homes.

The CTO and Co-Founder of business ISP Timico UK, Trefor Davies, has called for a “total network rollout” of true fibre optic broadband (FTTP) services after highlighting how corrosion on his copper BT telecoms line had caused a recently installed FTTC service to drop from an average speed of 53Mbps to just 6Mbps (Megabits).

ISP Gigaclear has begun work to install its new 1000Mbps (1Gbps) capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network around the small rural civil parish hamlet of Frilford and Frilford Heath (eventually including Cothill) in Oxfordshire (England), which will be priced from £37 per month.

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national telecoms network, has announced that their recent technical trial of the forthcoming 220Mbps (20Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP product has gone without a hitch. The full pilot will now begin on 1st March 2013 as planned.

The state aid supported Superfast North Yorkshire (SNY) project, which with the help of BT seeks to make superfast broadband ISP services available to 100% of local homes and businesses by 2017 (90% by the end of 2014), has revealed that over 24,000 premises in 34 communities will be included in the first stages.

BT Wholesale’s latest price list update reveals that the operators forthcoming and “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads) capable FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD) broadband ISP service, which will be available to FTTC capable UK lines from spring 2013, could attract Excess Construction Charges (ECC) of over £3,000.

The boss of telecoms analyst firm Point Topic, Oliver Johnson, has warned that blowing true fibre optic lines (FTTH / P) along the streets and across the fields of Europe and the United Kingdom is ultimately “super-expensive” and thus no longer the “first choice” when it comes to building new superfast broadband networks.

National UK telecoms operator BT has today announced a final list of 99 telephone exchanges that will soon be able to receive its latest 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) or “ultra-fast” 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based superfast broadband ISP products through their commercial roll-out.

The £132m Superfast Cornwall scheme, which aims to roll-out fibre optic based broadband (FTTC etc.) ISP services to “at least” 80% of homes and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014, has achieved a “major milestone” after it became available to around 125,000 Cornish premises (i.e. 50% coverage).

The Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) confirms that BT has been picked as the “preferred supplier” to help every household in the county gain access to a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP connection by March 2017 (note: 90% coverage for speeds of 25Mbps+ is set for 2015).
