Last year Community Fibre revealed an aspiration to extend their 1Gbps+ fibre optic broadband (FTTH/B) network to cover 500,000 homes in London (here) and today they’ve moved a step toward that by securing £11.3m of private equity investment from RPMI Railpen and existing shareholders.

The Government’s £1.7bn Broadband Delivery UK project has published its latest Q1 2017 take-up data for their roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which is a key gauge for how much public investment suppliers (e.g. BT) will have to return.

A new £7.4 million deal has this week been signed between BT and Dorset County Council in England, which will enable Openreach to roll-out their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network to an additional 3,800 businesses and homes in the county by summer 2019.

Ultrafast “Full Fibre” ISP TrueSpeed Communications, which has been deploying a new 100Mbps+ Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to rural areas in North East Somerset (England), has managed to attract a huge investment of £75m from Aviva Investors to help expand their network.

The Advertising Standards Authority has announced that their existing probe into the use or abuse of “fibre broadband” terminology in ISP adverts, which can currently apply to both slower hybrid fibre (FTTC / HFC DOCSIS) and ultrafast “full fibre” (FTTP/H) services, is being extended.

The B4RN inspired Fibre for Rural Nottinghamshire (F4RN) project, which is rolling out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network to houses in rural Fiskerton and Morton, has been disrupted by £1,000 worth of damage after several of their cable ducts were cut by vandals.

Some 9,000 homes around new build sites at Rosewell, Midlothian, Johnstone, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Lossiemouth, Edinburgh, East Calder, East Kilbride, Bonnyrigg, Inverness, Kintore and Chapelton are next in line to get Openreach’s (BT) ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband service.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) has granted first-stage approval (‘consent‘) to a new standard called L.110, which specifies a lightweight optical cable that could make it easier and cheaper for communities to roll-out their own FTTH/P ultrafast broadband networks.

Last year the Government committed £400m of public money to support a new Digital Infrastructure Investment Fund (here), which has today gone live. The new fund could help to support alternative network ISPs in deploying ultrafast broadband FTTH/P networks to 2 million extra UK premises.
