ECTA Tells EU to Protect Small Broadband ISPs from Dominant Telco Abuse

The European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA), which represents alternative / smaller broadband ISPs, has demanded that the European Commission (EC) “take urgent action” to prevent dominant national telecoms operators (e.g. BT) from using “discriminatory conduct” against them and thus damaging their ability to compete in the new market for superfast broadband (FTTx etc.) services.

AAISP Reveals First Real World 330Mbps UK FTTP Broadband Trial Speeds

Business focused ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today provided some of the first real customer feedback from its closed technical trial of BT’s latest ‘up to’ 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology, which saw one user receive actual internet download speeds of 192.39Mbps (Megabits per second) with 28.53Mbps upload and just 6ms latency.

10.8 Million UK Superfast Fibre Broadband Lines Predicted for Q4 2016

The latest market forecast from telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has predicted that the UK will be home to a total of 25.9 million broadband ISP lines by the end of 2016 (currently 20,736,500), with 10.8 million coming from superfast “FTTx” (fibre optic) connections (“28 times the total FTTx lines recorded for Q4 2011“).

BT Promises Speeds of up to 80Mbps for 90% of Rutland UK by Q4 2013

BT has pledged to make superfast broadband (FTTC) ISP speeds of up to 80Mbps (Megabits per second) available to over 90% of Rutland’s (England, UK) 17,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2013. The plan was announced today during a contract signing event between BT and Rutland County Council (RCC), which was held at the historic Oakham Castle.

Internet provider ICUK has today become the latest ISP to launch a new range of up to 80Mbps (FTTC) superfast broadband packages for home and business users. On top of that the UK provider has also introduced a truly fibre optic 100Mbps service, which makes use of the latest Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms infrastructure, has confirmed its intention to begin offering the “fastest wholesale broadband speeds currently available” via a new “premium” 330Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service from 11th June 2012. The first pricing and a new 220Mbps option have also been revealed.

ISP BT Top 6.28M Broadband Customers as FTTC Passes 10M UK Homes

National UK telecoms giant BT has released its latest results to 31st March (Q1-2012), which saw their retail broadband ISP subscriber base add +136,000 customers (down from +146k in Q4-2011) to hit a total of 6,280,000. Elsewhere its FTTC superfast broadband service has now passed 10 million homes and businesses (almost 40% of the country), well ahead of their original Q4-2012 target.

UK ISP TalkTalk Calls on Ofcom to Push BT for Cheaper Superfast Broadband

Internet provider TalkTalk, which established itself in the UK market by offering extremely cheap home broadband services over their unbundled ADSL2+ (LLU) network, has called on Ofcom to develop a new regulatory framework that would effectively force BT to cut the wholesale / rental cost of superfast broadband services to ISPs from 2015.

LSE Identifies GBP1.1bn Shortfall in UK Governments Broadband Funding

A new study from the London School of Economics (LSE) has estimated that the UK governments plan to make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) ISP services available to 90% of “people in each local authority area” by 2015 is now at risk due to a significant shortfall of £1.1 billion.

Europe Aims to Cut Superfast Broadband Rollout Costs by 25%

The European Commission (EC) has today opened a new consultation that aims to cut the costs of broadband investment by 25% and thus make it cheaper to deploy new networks for “high speed internet” in the EU. Priority will be given to reducing the costs associated with civil engineering (i.e. digging up roads to lay fibre optic cable), which can account for up to 80% of the total cost.

Fixed Telecom Operators to Spend GBP33bn on Fibre Optic Rollouts by 2017

Consultancy firm Analysys Mason has estimated that fixed telecoms operators, specifically those in developed countries (Central and Eastern Europe, developed Asia–Pacific, North America and Western Europe), will over the next 5 year period (between 2012 and 2017) spend £33 billion (USD53.5bn) on the roll-out of new superfast fibre optic broadband networks (e.g. FTTH).

Rural Hampshire UK Village Gets 40Mb Broadband via a Public Service Network

Residents of the aptly named rural village called Little London in Hampshire (England, UK), which could previously only receive internet download speeds of around 0.5Mbps (Megabits per second), can now access superfast broadband of up to 40Mbps thanks to a clever use of the local fibre optic Public Service Network (PSN).

BT Openreach Invites UK ISPs to Join Trial of 330Mbps Fibre Optic Broadband

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms and internet access infrastructure, has begun inviting ISPs (i.e. those that are members of the NGA Industry Group) to take part in its first official trial of “premium” ultrafast 330Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband speeds (likely to be advertised as a clean “300Mbps“).

Superfast Broadband Reaches 95000 Homes and Businesses in Cornwall UK

The Superfast Cornwall project has announced that superfast broadband ISP services are now available to 95,000 Cornish homes and businesses, although just 6,000+ premises have actually subscribed to the service. Thankfully new orders are being created at an average rate of 250 per week, which is up from 200 per week and 4,000 connected in February 2012.

BT Bid for all Broadband Contracts as UK Gov Shun Universal Service Obligation

The UK government’s Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey, has confirmed that BT are officially bidding on all 8 of the currently active superfast broadband procurement contracts (more will follow). Separately Vaizey said that “the time is not right” to introduce a legal Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband.

BT Claims UK First by Running Fibre Optic Broadband to Multiple Office Units
