UPDATE2 UK ISPs to Send First Internet Piracy Warning Letters this Month

ISPreview.co.uk can today confirm that the first Internet piracy warning letters (aka – “subscriber alerts” or “educational emails“) will this month begin to be sent by all of the biggest broadband ISPs. The “alerts” will be issued to those users who are suspected of engaging in online copyright infringement.

The European Court of Justice (CJEU) has today ruled that operators of free (no password required) public WiFi hotspots cannot be held liable for copyright infringements (Internet piracy) committed by users on their networks, but there’s a password-attached catch.

A few months ago Sky UK (Sky Broadband) won a WIPO domain name dispute against a website (Skysportslive.**) that was streaming their TV content without permission. But despite taking ownership Sky has not shut it down and the domain continues to offer links to pirated streams. Awkward.

UK ISPs Lose Appeal Against Website Blocks for Trade Mark Abuse

Several big UK broadband ISPs, including BT, Sky Broadband, EE, TalkTalk and Virgin Media, have lost an appeal against a 2014 ruling by the High Court, which extended court ordered website blocking to include sites that sell counterfeit goods (i.e. abuse of Trade Mark).

The Intellectual Property Office has published its sixth study into the extent of online copyright infringement by broadband ISP and mobile customers, which estimates that 15% of UK Internet users aged 12+ (6.7 million people) had consumed at least one item of “illegal” online content (down from 18% last year) and 5% “exclusively consumed illegal content” (down from 6%).

A new study of nearly 60,000 Internet users in the United Kingdom has examined whether the 2014 block of 53 pirate websites (copyright infringement) by the largest broadband ISPs had a positive outcome for legal content. The results suggest that it did, although there may be diminishing returns for future blocks.

UK Labour MP Criticises Piracy Letters for Chasing 83 Year Old Pensioner

The UK Labour MP for Dudley North, Ian Austin, has called on the Government’s Business Secretary, Sajid Javid, to protect consumers after an 83-year-old customer of Sky Broadband was dubiously accused of sharing unlawful copies of ‘The Company You Keep‘ (TCYK) film over public BitTorrent file sharing (P2P) networks.
