Broadband ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today announced that they’ve started a trial of both DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT) services, which encrypts Domain Name System requests (i.e. turning IP addresses into human readable domains like ISPreview.co.uk and back again) in order to make them secure.

Andrew Glover, Chair of the UK ISPA, has told ISPreview in a new interview that a no-deal Brexit could harm both the industry’s supply chain and access to a skilled workforce. Glover also warns that DNS over HTTPS (DoH) raises a “host of security concerns” and says “considerable regulatory change” is needed to hit full fibre targets.

A new survey of 2,000 British people by the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) has helped to shed new light on the reason why some people (18% of respondents) still choose NOT to use the internet. The UK High Court has dismissed Liberty‘s legal challenge against the Government’s bulk data retention policy in its 2016 Investigatory Powers Act (IPAct), which is a mass surveillance approach that also catches innocent peoples communications data (i.e. phone, mobile and internet activity). The group expects to appeal.

The Government has concluded its Telecoms Supply Chain Review and plans to establish new Telecoms Security Requirements, which will be underpinned by a legislative framework that hands stronger enforcement powers to Ofcom in order to “protect” UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband and 5G networks from threats. But no decision on Huawei.

One embarrassment too many. The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has, at the 11th hour, decided to scrap the “Internet Villain” category from their annual industry awards event, which came after a global backlash over their decision to nominate Mozilla due to their DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) push.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has published a list of finalists for the “Internet Hero” and “Internet Villain” categories at this year’s forthcoming annual internet industry awards, although the decision to put Mozilla under the Villain category for their DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) push may be contentious.

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has today imposed a £100,000 fine on BT-owned mobile operator EE after the company sent over 2.5 million direct marketing messages (texts) to its customers during early 2019, albeit without gaining their consent to do so.

A legal challenged brought by Liberty in the UK High Court has pointed to the “undoubtedly unlawful” bulk retention of largely innocent peoples communications data (telecoms and internet) by MI5, which stems from an apparent failure to adhere to the safeguards set out in the Government’s 2016 Investigatory Powers Act (IPAct).

The fallout from a 2015 cyberattack against TalkTalk’s UK website, which exposed the personal data of 156,959 customers to hackers, appears to be continuing after a new report alleges that the broadband ISP failed to correctly inform 4,545 customers that their data had been compromised (instead they were told it was NOT exposed).

Mobile operators Three UK, Vodafone, EE (BT) and O2 are to be officially told by the Government that they will be banned from deploying hardware and software from Chinese tech giant Huawei into the core of their future 5G based mobile broadband networks, although non-core 5G kit (antennas etc.) will be exempt.

The UK Government, broadband ISPs and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) are set to meet on the 8th May 2019 in order to discuss Google’s forthcoming implementation of encrypted DNS (DoH – DNS over HTTPS), which politicians fear could break their internet censorship plans.

11th April, 2019 (22 Comments)

A significant change is on the way that could improve the security of the internet’s Domain Name System (DNS) by adopting DNS over HTTPS (DoH), although this could also create lots of new problems for broadband ISPs and mobile operators (e.g. disrupting UK Government required censorship systems) that may be hard to overcome.
