UK ISP Virgin Media Business has won the Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) contract for Belfast in Northern Ireland, which will see more than 200 public sector sites being linked up by a new Gigabit-capable data network. Reports this morning claim that BT (Openreach) are in “secret” negotiations with the government and UK ISPs about a new six point plan, which could see the last of their old copper phone lines being switched off by 2027 and replaced by “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband. Provided everybody agrees of course.

The Welsh Government (WG) has quietly made a small but important change to LOT 1 (North West Wales) of their £22.5m Phase 2 “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) roll-out contract with BT (Openreach), which so far as we can tell appears to replace the hybrid fibre FTTC deployment areas with ultrafast “full fibre” FTTP.

Andrew Glover, Chair of the UK ISPA, has told ISPreview in a new interview that a no-deal Brexit could harm both the industry’s supply chain and access to a skilled workforce. Several industry sources have indicated to ISPreview.co.uk that they now expect the Government to water down Boris Johnson’s (Prime Minister) pledge to cover the United Kingdom in “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2025, which will instead be replaced by “gigabit” or “gigafast” terminology (i.e. delivery by more than just full fibre).
