Researchers at MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics have tried to compare the estimated global data capacity of the four largest Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellite constellations – SpaceX (Starlink), Telesat, OneWeb, and Amazon (Kuiper). Interestingly, they end up closer than you might think.

Some customers of SpaceX’s new Starlink ISP, which operates a growing mega constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites, are finding that high winds, visibility of the sky and power usage aren’t the only issues they’ll have to contend with, as the dish can also shut down during very hot weather.

Global ISP Starlink (SpaceX) has secured approval from the FCC to make several tweaks to their new mega constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites, which among other things will result in improved internet speeds and latency for customers across the world and UK.

OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK Government and aims to deploy a global network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for ultrafast low-latency broadband provision (here), has today secured $550m (£395m) in funding from rival operator Eutelsat. This brings their total funding to $1.9bn (£1.37bn) in fresh equity.

The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 1.6% (18.59 million) in Q4 2020, which is down slightly from 2.07% in the previous quarter but still pushes the overall total to 1.18 billion. Meanwhile, the UK reported the strongest quarterly “full fibre” (FTTP) growth of any country on 28.6%.

A quick look at the new Terms and Conditions for this reveals some key changes, such as the inclusion of satellite, a £100k funding cap on project changes and other caveats.

The UK MD for Defence and Space at Airbus, Richard Franklin, has reportedly said that future ultrafast broadband satellites from OneWeb could integrate lasers to help create an “unjammable” backstop for if a hostile country (e.g. Russia or China) were to ever launch attacks against our vulnerable undersea fibre optic cables.

In a brief announcement Starlink (SpaceX) has today confirmed that their new constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites is “now available in parts of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England,” which is in addition to existing service areas across southern England.

The CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk, has revealed that the on-going expansion of Starlink‘s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based broadband satellites will, by the end of this year, push customer download speeds up to around 300Mbps and bring network latency down to around 20ms (milliseconds). A cheaper budget package is also planned.

The Fiber Broadband Association, which represents FTTP networks and suppliers in the USA, has published a new study that claims Elon Musk’s new constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based Starlink broadband satellites will face a “capacity shortfall” by 2028 and over 56% of their “RDOF subscribers” (rural) may not be fully served.
