The CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk, has revealed that the first batch of their next generation Starlink v3 satellites could “start launching [into Low Earth Orbit] on Starship in 6 to 9 months“, which are eventually expected to push broadband speeds closer to gigabit (1000Mbps) territory and further improve latency times. But Musk is known for over-promising on timelines.

Ofcom Propose to Boost Starlink’s UK Satellite Broadband with E Band

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to grant SpaceX’s Starlink service “temporary authorisation” to harness the E band frequencies for their mega constellation of compact ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The move would expand their backhaul capacity at three gateway earth station sites within the UK.

Satellite operator Viasat and German car manufacturer BMW claim to have demonstrated the ability for vehicles to connect over satellite (non-terrestrial networks) for emergency messaging and hazard warnings. This is designed to complement modern terrestrial 4G and 5G mobile network connectivity solutions (many cars already have something akin to the latter).

BT and Avanti Broadband in Legal Dispute Over Rural EE UK Mobile Capacity

The High Court in London has rejected an application by mobile operator EE (BT) for interim injunctive relief against satellite provider Avanti Broadband, which had “threatened to withdraw” its backhaul services – used to help supply data capacity to some of the remotest rural UK mast sites – unless the mobile operator agreed to pay a “substantially increased rate“.

SpaceX Proposes Starlink Can Deliver Sat Nav to Complement GPS

SpaceX has proposed that its Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds to the UK and beyond via a mega constellation of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), can offer Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) solutions to complement GPS. This would meet the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) desire for an alternative to GPS.

ScotRail Upgrades Highlands Trains with Faster Onboard WiFi

Scottish train operator ScotRail has today announced that they’ve launched a new 6-month trial alongside communications provider Clarus Networks, which will extend their Starlink (satellite) based broadband upgrade of onboard WiFi – this is to include six class 158 trains that travel along their Highlands routes in Scotland.

World Broadband Lines Top 1.5bn as UK Full Fibre Grows 11.7 Percent in Q4 2024

New research from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband lines grew by 0.91% or 13.5 million in Q4 2024 (down from 1.44% in Q3 2024) to total 1.5 billion connections. The subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks also remained strong in the UK at 11.7%, putting us just two places behind the leading countries for growth.

Online shopping giant Amazon last night succeeded in launching their first batch of 27 ultrafast broadband satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for Project Kuiper. The platforms were put into space by a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 551 rocket that unleashed some 2.7 million pounds (12 megaNewtons) of thrust.

But new customers in that same area may now be hit with a £195 one-off “congestion charge” instead.

NFU Warn Farms Being Excluded from UK Gigabit Broadband Rollout by Cost

Starlink Preps New UTR-251 Router for Satellite Broadband Service

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds via a mega constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has notified the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the USA of their intent to launch a new Wi-Fi router for their customers – model code UTR-251. The new kit appears positioned to replace the previous Gen 3 (UTR-231) kit, but it has some caveats.

Ofcom Grant Kepler a UK Licence for Small Broadband Satellites

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has finally granted Canadian company Kepler Communications a wireless telegraphy satellite earth station network licence for the operation of their new global network of CubeSats and larger sized broadband satellites. This will allow them to deploy their user terminals for a range of different services in the UK.

British Satellite Broadband Operator Avanti Opens New HQ

Avanti Communications, which is based in the UK and runs the HYLAS network of four large Ka-band communication satellites in high earth orbit (35,792km) for rural broadband and backhaul delivery across the EMEA, has this week opened a new technology HQ in the heart of Spaceport Cornwall’s Space Systems Operations Facility in Newquay.

But it will take a further 79 launches before the new global mega constellation is fully completed.
