EE has announced that they’ve switched-on their 4G Mobile network for premises on the remote Inner Hebrides Isle of Coll, which is home to just a couple of hundred people. Mind you they weren’t the first to do this (Vodafone has had a community supported 4G service on the island since 2015).

The Scottish Government has finally begun the formal process of setting out a plan for reaching its goal of 100% “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage by 2021, which will aim to reach an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 premises that are unlikely to benefit from their existing strategy.

The non-profit Scottish Rural Action group has published a new report that points to “serious failings” in Scotland’s existing roll-out of “superfast broadband” services with BT and calls for 5 major policy changes, which they say would establish an “ultrafast” (300Mbps+) model for rural areas.

Several rural Scottish Highlands communities around the Ullapool, Lochbroom, Little Lochbroom and Coigach areas have clubbed together in order to form the Highland Community Broadband (HCB), which aims to fund and build its own “superfast” (50Mbps capable) wireless broadband network in the area.

The London Internet Exchange has criticised last week’s progress report on the roll-out of “superfast broadband” in Scotland (here), not least because of Audit Scotland‘s failure to fully reflect that LINX has already established an Internet Exchange in Scotland (IXScotland) and it needs support.

Cityfibre has announced that the roll-out of their new multi-million-pound and 40km long Gigabit fibre optic (FTTP) broadband and Ethernet network in the city of Glasgow (Scotland) will begin within the next 3-4 months, which seems to represent a delay from the original “early in 2016” plan.

Openreach (BT) has revealed that the first field trial of their new Long Reach VDSL (FTTC) broadband technology will take place in the remote rural village of North Tolsta, which resides in the Scottish Outer Hebrides on the east side of the Isle of Lewis.

A new report from Audit Scotland, which works to ensure that public money in Scotland is spent correctly, has found that the £410m Digital Scotland roll-out programme with BT has achieved its initial coverage target. But delivering 95% “fibre broadband” coverage by December 2017 “will be more challenging.”

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has issued an update on the £5.6m deal with Edinburgh City Council in Scotland, which is extending their existing Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network in the city to around 150km. The work is now expected to complete by the end of next month.

The Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) scheme has released a grant of £30,400 that will be used to upgrade the rural Marykirk.com fixed wireless broadband network, which has already connected 80 premises along the South Aberdeenshire and North Angus border in Scotland.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that their superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband network is being extended to the remote island group of Orkney off the north-eastern coast of Scotland, with homes and businesses in Kirkwall (largest town of 9,000+ people) being among the first to benefit.
