Earlier this year Hyperoptic announced that they’d be extending their 1000Mbps (1Gbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise / Building (FTTP/B) based ultrafast broadband network to 7 extra “hyper-cities” in the UK (here) and today the first buildings have now started to go live in Edinburgh (Scotland).

Homes on the Isle of Arran, which is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde (Scotland), look set to become the first in the UK to get a faster broadband connection via White Space technology. This harnesses the gaps in radio spectrum that exist between Digital Terrestrial TV channels (470-790MHz).

Fife-based ISP Rapier Systems has launched a new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) style connectivity solution for businesses, called RapierBusinessConnect (RBC), which claims that it can deliver symmetric Ethernet speeds of “up to 1Gbps for as little as £49.99 per month” in areas where they have coverage.

After a long delay Cityfibre has today confirmed that their contractors have started to build Phase One of a new Gigabit capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network in the centre of Glasgow (Scotland), which will be connected up to an existing 31km long network in the city and serve local businesses.

The Scottish Land & Estates (SLE) group, which claims to be a “unified voice” for all those who own land and rural businesses in Scotland, has criticised the UK Government’s proposals for making it easier and cheaper to build new fixed line broadband and mobile infrastructure on their property.

Good news for those living in the rural Highlands and Islands region of Scotland. The £410m Digital Scotland programme with Openreach (BT) has announced that strong take-up of “fibre broadband” means an extra 6,000 premises will be covered via a reinvestment of £2.3m.

Telecoms operator BT has today switched-on a new 10Gbps link to the remote Scottish island of Shetland in the North Sea, which will serve to both improve local network resilience and boost capacity for Openreach’s on-going roll-out of FTTC/P based superfast broadband connectivity.

Last month we reported that several rural communities around Ullapool, Lochbroom, Little Lochbroom, Gruinard Bay, Elphin and Coigach in the Scottish Highlands were aiming to build their own 50Mbps wireless broadband network (here). Happily the project has now begun its build phase after raising £85,000.

Customers of Sky Broadband and possibly a few other ISPs in the North of Scotland may be experiencing sporadic connectivity problems with their broadband and phone services today, which appears to have been caused by BTOpenreach’s “over-running network maintenance.”

Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has confirmed that an additional 360,000 homes and businesses in Scotland are set to benefit from their on-going £3bn Project Lightning network expansion by 2019. Elsewhere 19,000 have separately been confirmed for the roll-out in Cambridgeshire (England).

A community built ISP in the Highlands of Scotland – Badenoch Broadband – has secured a new investment of £41,800 from the Scottish Government in order to extend the coverage and speed of their wireless network, which currently covers a number of areas around the village of Laggan (Badenoch).

EE has announced that they’ve switched-on their 4G Mobile network for premises on the remote Inner Hebrides Isle of Coll, which is home to just a couple of hundred people. Mind you they weren’t the first to do this (Vodafone has had a community supported 4G service on the island since 2015).
