The Scottish Government has today published a new Digital Strategy, which among other things confirms their plan to make 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” available to 100% of premises by 2021 via an “outside-in” approach (prioritising public investment for the hardest to reach rural areas).

The £410 million Digital Scotland project with BT (Openreach) has announced that £15.6 million from contract clawback (Gainshare) will be reinvested to raise the number of homes and businesses that have access to “superfast broadband” speeds of greater than 24Mbps.

Cityfibre has announced that the construction of their pure fibre optic ultrafast broadband and Ethernet network in the city of Glasgow (Scotland) has now begun moving westwards into the Finnieston area, where a number of local businesses have expressed an interest in receiving their service.

Cityfibre has suspended one of their civil works contractors, KNNS, in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland). The action occurred after a dashcam video emerged that showed one of their fibre optic engineers sitting exposed in a manhole on a busy 30MPH street, with only two small traffic cones for protection.

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed that 10,000 premises in Scotland’s Midlothian council area will gain access to their TV and 300Mbps capable broadband network before the end of 2018, which forms part of the operator’s wider expansion to another 360,000 premises across the country.

Ofcom has today published their annual Connected Nations 2016 report, which confirms that 89% of UK premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband service (up from 83% in 2015), with take-up hitting 31% (up from 27%). But only 1.7% (498K premises) can get “full fibre” (FTTP/H).

Aberdeen-based broadband and telecoms provider Internet for Business (IFB) has today announced that it will invest an extra £1 million to upgrade the capacity of its UK network, which will help the ISP to support their current and future “fibre and ultra-high speed connectivity” (e.g. FTTP) products.
