The Digital Scotland project has today announced that 500,000 additional premises have now been put within reach of BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, but there’s still no sign of the expected second contract in order to help expand coverage beyond the current target(s).

The Board of the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) have agreed to work in partnership with the Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) initiative in order to setup a community organisation, which aims to deliver faster broadband services to around 1,000 premises in the region’s remotest areas.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published its Connected Nations 2015 report and confirmed that 83% of premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service (up from 75% in 2014), with take-up reaching 27% (up from 22%). But they also changed the definition of “ultrafast” speeds from 100Mbps+ to 300Mbps+.

Network developer Cityfibre, which is currently rolling out ultrafast Gigabit-capable fibre optic (FTTP) broadband networks across a growing number of UK cities, has announced that Glasgow in Scotland will become the next to benefit from early in 2016.

The first 12 homes have now been connected to a new “superfast” capable fixed wireless broadband network, which is fuelled by a grant of £152,000 and will soon cover around 250 premises in the Humbie, Fala and neighbouring areas in East Lothian and Midlothian (Scotland).

The Fife Council in Scotland has confirmed that another £150,000 of additional funding has been set aside to help bring superfast capable broadband services to the final 1.6% of premises (2,800 homes and businesses) in the county.

Skyenet, a rural community project that delivers fixed wireless broadband services to Aird, Achnacloich, Tokavaig, Ord and Drumfearn on the remote Isle of Skye in Scotland, has announced that their network will soon be expanded to include Heaste in the south of Sky and other Sleat villages.

Pure fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today announced that their Gigabit (1000Mbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is now being deployed to the city of Glasgow in Scotland, with the first homes to benefit existing inside the ‘Glasgow Harbour’ urban regeneration area.

Broadband users with connections that are based off BTOpenreach’s national network (e.g. BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk), specifically those who reside around the eastern side of Edinburgh in Scotland (East Lothian), appear to be suffering from a curious fault that is causing downloads to corrupt.

Many homes and businesses on the remote Isle of Bute in Scotland are already benefitting from faster broadband connectivity thanks to the joint Digital Scotland and BT project, but not all areas will benefit. The good news is that a local community project has just secured £5,000 to fill some of the gaps.

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has signed a new 7-year and £5.6 million deal (including an option to extend to 19 years and grow in value to £16m) with Edinburgh City Council that will see the operator construct a new 100km long Gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network extension in the city.
