Lothian Broadband Expand FTTP Network Rollout to the Black Isle

Scottish ISP Lothian Broadband (LBN), which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network across rural parts of East Lothian, the Highlands and Fife, has announced that their network rollout is now being expanded across rural parts of the Black Isle area.

Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave has today published the results of a new real-world benchmark, which examined the mobile operator performance of EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media), Vodafone and Three UK across the country’s capital city of London. Suffice to say that EE came out top for mobile broadband speeds and network coverage.

The operator appears, at least initially, to be planning to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across poorly served rural villages in Shropshire (England), before expanding into other parts of the UK.

2023 H2 – UK Full Fibre Broadband Cover Reaches 60.5 Percent

The latest UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 60.54% of premises (up from 52.77% in H1 2023) and 79.86% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 76.22%). Full Fibre Rollout to Remote Fair Isle Sets New Openreach Record

Openreach (BT) has announced that they’ve managed to bring their gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to the remote Fair Isle, which is a tiny island that sits around halfway between Shetland and the Orkney islands (Scotland) – the longest distance (100km) they’ve been able to transmit a continuous fibre signal anywhere in the UK.

Ofcom – UK Gigabit Broadband Rises to 78% as 5G Tops 85-93%

The latest Connection Nations 2023 UK digital infrastructure report has today been published by Ofcom, which finds that “gigabit-capable broadband” ISP networks now cover 78% of the UK (up from 70% in 2022), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 85-93% of premises (up from 67-77%).

The Building Digital UK agency has released their Winter 2023 (Dec) progress update on the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which is so far running live contracts and procurements worth over £2bn in state aid to help extend coverage to an extra 1.1 million hard to reach premises.
