Data Breach at Virgin Media Exposes 900,000 UK Customers UPDATE

As if yesterday’s broadband outage wasn’t bad enough. UK ISP Virgin Media is now facing their second embarrassment of the week after last night revealing that the personal details belonging to 900,000 of their customers had been exposed by an “incorrectly configured” marketing database. Oh and somebody unknown accessed it.

Network Rail and C3UK Confirm WiFi Personal Data Breach

The organisation responsible for maintaining 20,000 miles of railway (train tracks etc.), Network Rail, has confirmed that one of their free WiFi hotspot provider’s – C3UK – has suffered a personal data breach that leaked the email addresses and travel details of about 10,000 people online.

Ofcom Set to Become UK Regulator for Internet Censorship

The UK Government has today proposed for Ofcom to take on the role of internet content regulator via a new legal “duty of care“, which would hand them the power to force company websites and social media firms into removing “harmful” content (e.g. bullying, terrorism, child abuse, self-harm and suicide imagery).

Parents Find UK ISP Network Level Internet Filters Beneficial

Ofcom’s latest annual ‘Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes‘ report has found that 9 out of 10 parents who use the network-level internet content filters provided by big UK broadband ISPs find them beneficial, but many still don’t use them and a fair few children can circumvent these systems.

Huawei You GO! UK Green Lights Firm for non-Core Telecoms Kit

After a protracted period of uncertainty the UK Government has today confirmed that kit from Chinese technology giant Huawei and other “high risk vendors” will be banned from the “sensitive” core of future UK 5G and “gigabit-capable” fixed broadband ISP networks, although non-core 5G kit (antennas, street cabinets etc.) will be exempt.

A team of South African and Chinese scientists have figure out how to harness multiple quantum patterns of twisted light (from a laser) so that it can be sent across a conventional single mode fibre optic cable (these can usually only support one pattern), which wouldn’t ordinarily be possible without a custom made fibre.

Firefox Says – NO DNS Over HTTPS (DoH) by Default for UK

In a surprise twist Mozilla has informed the Government that they now have “no plans” to enable the DNS-over-HTTPS security feature by default for UK internet users in their popular Firefox website browser, at least not without “further engagement with public and private stakeholders.” Doh!

Google Chrome v77 Browser Breaks Netgear Router Logins

ISP Association on the Risks of Brexit, DoH and UK Full Fibre Targets

Andrew Glover, Chair of the UK ISPA, has told ISPreview in a new interview that a no-deal Brexit could harm both the industry’s supply chain and access to a skilled workforce. Glover also warns that DNS over HTTPS (DoH) raises a “host of security concerns” and says “considerable regulatory change” is needed to hit full fibre targets.

A new survey of 2,000 British people by the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) has helped to shed new light on the reason why some people (18% of respondents) still choose NOT to use the internet. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the biggest reason turns out to be a simple “lack of interest” (69% of non-users now vs 82% in 2013).
